Our mission is to grow and strengthen local and journalism and, in doing so, serve the residents of New Jersey.
About us
The Center was founded in 2012 in response to the downsizing of New Jersey news organizations and the changes in the ownership of regional public media. These shifts in the news and information landscape hurt the volume of local news available in a state that has historically had limited news coverage, due to its proximity to the major metropolitan areas of New York City and Philadelphia. With 565 municipalities packed into a densely populated state, New Jersey was—and is—ripe for innovation in local journalism. The Center coordinates statewide and regional reporting, connecting more than 280 local news and information providers through its flagship project, the NJ News Commons. The Commons helps partners to share content and encourages them to collaborate and to support one another. The Center also conducts and publishes research on emerging ideas and best practices, focusing on local journalism, business models, and ecosystem mapping. The Center convenes national programs, including an annual national summit for journalism organizations to foster the conditions, ideas, and practices that lead to stronger collaborative journalism across the U.S. The Center’s annual reports offer a detailed history of programs and impact. The Center is a grant-funded program within the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University. Funding from the University supports the director’s salary and benefits, office space for the Center and its staff, and infrastructure support and shared services such as IT, development, marketing, and administrative assistance. The Center receives core support from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the Democracy Fund and the Abrams Foundation, as well as project support from many other grantmaking sources and sponsors.

Local journalists are being empowered to address the rise of extremism through specialized training and resources. During a workshop hosted by U.S. Democracy Day, journalist Kyle Spencer provided crucial guidance on identifying, understanding, and reporting on local extremist groups without spreading misinformation or inciting fear. With hate and anti-government organizations doubling since 2021, this training meets a critical need. Spencer's session included identifying common extremist groups, understanding their funding and recruitment tactics, and maintaining personal safety when dealing with hostile sources. Journalists are encouraged to use Spencer's guide and participate in U.S. Democracy Day's initiatives to strengthen democracy at the local level. Additional resources for comprehensive democracy coverage in 2024 are also available to support impactful reporting. #USDemocracyDay #Democracy #Workshop #ReportingRight https://lnkd.in/e6H8JJCP

Creating participatory media projects that spark dialogue and change. Community engagement meets journalism with a dash of social practice art.
I learned so much collaborating with a cohort of sexual assault survivors to tell stories of harm, healing and justice. I've put those learnings into a guide for other reporters who want to do more participatory and trauma-informed journalism. Find it at bit.ly/care-in-journalism from the Center for Cooperative Media

The Center for Cooperative Media today released its first diversity survey taking a look at the New Jersey news ecosystem, based on a similar report in North Carolina. The results were disappointing in some regards, encouraging in others. We didn't get the best survey response, first of all – getting people to actually fill it out was a slog. Not one journalist told us no once we reached them, but reaching them and putting the survey in front of them was time consuming and not as successful as we wanted. Good news: The ecosystem appears to reflect our population more than it does in other parts of the country, although we need more diversity in leadership and most Hispanic and Latinos in our journalism ranks. Bad news: There is high turnover, burnout and lower rates of pay for journalists of color. Read more at the link below. A huge thanks to our researchers David Coppini and Kareem El Damanhoury from the University of Denver.
