CDT recently submitted comments to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy on building the Federal Evidence Agenda on Disability Equity. https://lnkd.in/ecgMvpGb CDT commends the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy for seeking public input & for its commitment to achieving real #equity for people with disabilities. Inclusive datasets are vital to prevent algorithmic bias, which disproportionately affects marginalized communities. Algorithmic systems learn from datasets, creating outputs like credit scores or risk assessments. When datasets aren't fully representative of people with disabilities, bias is amplified, leading to negative impacts. To reduce these effects, representative datasets must be used to train and assess algorithms for risks to disabled individuals. A federal strategy on #DisabilityEquity in data is crucial for mitigating discrimination. CDT emphasized the need to address disparities, data collection barriers, & privacy concerns. We highlighted the importance of privacy protection mechanisms & defined various models of disability affecting data gathering. 🔗 Read the full comments here: https://lnkd.in/ecgMvpGb

CDT's Kristin Woelfel in Daily Progress discussing the implications of web filtering technology’s use in K-12 schools and the #censorship concerns it raises. “In CDT's survey, nearly three-quarters of students said web filters make it hard to complete assignments. Even accounting for youthful exaggeration, 57 percent of teachers said the same was true for their students.” “[Woelfel] said she and her colleagues started to think of the web filters as a ‘digital book ban,’ an act of censorship that's as troubling as a physical book ban but far less visible.” “‘You can see whether a book is on a shelf,’ [Woelfel] said. By contrast, decisions about which websites or categories to block happen under the radar.” https://lnkd.in/eJb6s38E

TODAY: CDT’s #AI Governance Lab Director Miranda Bogen spoke before the PCLOB on the challenges that come with the use of #ArtificialIntelligence (AI) in counterterrorism and other national security programs. Key takeaways: 1) Use of #AI will continue to exacerbate privacy & civil liberties risk. 2) AI-powered systems remain inherently unreliable & difficult to scrutinize, making oversight critically important. 3) Ensuring human decision makers with subject matter and domain expertise can & do maintain meaningful oversight over the use of AI systems will require proactive effort. 4) AI use should not circumvent rules & safeguards established for intelligence agencies & personnel. 5) PCLOB should assess compliance with and sufficiency of existing executive policies on agencies’ use of AI. https://lnkd.in/esPVSTjN Stream Miranda Bogen’s full testimony here. https://lnkd.in/e_TXFtTF

July is #DisabilityPride Month, in commemoration of the passage of the #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct on July 26, 1990. CDT's Ariana Aboulafia spoke with ABA about what #disability pride means to her – “Disability pride…means recognizing that being disabled [is] being part of a community, and a culture, and a history,” she said. https://lnkd.in/eqjyfqjt CDT is proud of our efforts to reduce technology-facilitated disability discrimination, and to center the rights and experiences of people with disabilities across our #TechPolicy and #DisabilityRights work. https://lnkd.in/e7yTJtdh This work is guided, in part, by our Advisory Committee – which is comprised of leading experts in disability rights, disability justice, and technology policy, who lend their expertise to our work, and help inform its priorities. https://lnkd.in/eWTKRzdK We are also proud to partner with many organizations in the #disability community, including AAPD, Bazelon Center, DREDF, NDR Advocates, and more. MUST READ: CDT’s Gabe Nicholas pens Op-Ed for Foreign Policy about how #AI companies can share information with researchers about how people use their products so we can have better AI policy. He provides recs for #AI companies: 1) Give users tools to voluntarily share chat logs directly w/ researchers. 2) Use transparency reports to share aggregate info ab how people use their products. 3) Explore privacy preserving ways to share anonymized chat logs w/ researchers. Just as the FDA and NHTSA ensure drug and car safety, regulators need to understand how people use AI to create evidence informed policy. https://lnkd.in/ekwM2-nV
