About us
The Center for Economic Inclusion is a cross-sector organization committed to strengthening the Minneapolis-St. Paul region’s civic infrastructure and collective capacity to disrupt systems and influence market forces to catalyze shared prosperity and advance an inclusive economy. The Center for Economic Inclusion is dedicated to advancing inclusive growth – by elevating data-driven promising practices, advocating inclusive policies, coordinating cross-sector, community-driven development, and piloting strategies that truly close the gaps. The Center uses an integrated approach to advancing inclusive growth and is home to an increasing number of existing cross-sector, results-driven efforts focused on racial equity and economic opportunity. Our integrating partners include: Northside Funders Group: Aligning investments and strategies to achieve racial and economic equity in North Minneapolis. East Side Funders Group: Deploying resources and investments to increase economic vitality for residents on the East Side of Saint Paul. Blue Line Coalition: Leveraging community power to change systems and policies in order to create wealth and well-being for communities of color, immigrants/refugees, migrants, people living with disabilities, and low-income communities along the Bottineau Light Rail corridor. Greater Metropolitan Workforce Council: The Greater Metropolitan Workforce Council (GMWC) is rooted in the local authority provided by the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and the State of Minnesota Workforce Council. The GMWC exists to lead innovation and collaboration in the 7-county area to achieve transformational change - closing both current and future employment gaps while increasing employment equity to the greater benefit of our combined communities.

FAMILY SUSTAINING WAGES IN MINNESOTA Through this research, we dug deeper into the root causes of racial wage disparities and found that they are largely driven by occupational segregation -- meaning that the job that people hold is largely predicted by their race. Example: In Minnesota, the most common job for Black Minnesotans as a health aide, while the most common job for white Minnesotans is as a manager. As the graphic reflects, we looked at the top 10 occupations in Minnesota for each racial group in 2021 and compared them to the family sustaining wage at the time: + Only ONE of the top 10 occupations for Hispanic workers was family sustaining. + Only TWO of the top 10 occupations for Black and multi-racial workers were family sustaining. + Meanwhile, SEVEN out of the top 10 occupations for Asian and white workers were family sustaining. + American Indian Indigenous workers are not reflected in this graphic because there were too few workers in each of these categories for that data to be reliable. FAMILY SUSTAINING WAGES MATTER TO ALL MINNESOTANS In our new report, we reviewed 2021 U.S. Census data to understand how many workers were earning a family sustaining wage. While the data show that just over half (55%) of Minnesota's 2.8 million workers are paid at least a family sustaining wage, Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous Minnesotans are the least likely to be paid a family sustaining wage, with only about 1/3 of all Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous workers reporting hourly wages above that threshold. Among Asian communities in Minnesota, Hmong workers are the largest cultural community with more than 40,000 workers, but the least likely to be paid a family sustaining wage (39%). Family sustaining wages impacts all Minnesotans. Approximately three in four workers paid less than a family sustaining wage are white. NEW RESEARCH Providing family sustaining wages for essential workers in Minnesota – jobs disproportionately held by women of color – also benefits employers and our overall state economy.
