Our projects integrate economic development, sustainability, technology, and equity to make cities work for everyone.
About us
CNT is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Chicago, that helps cities use resources more efficiently and equitably. We research, invent, and test urban strategies that integrate economic development, environmental sustainability, and technology, with a focus on low-income communities and communities of color. For four decades, we have been known for our advanced analytics, thorough community engagement, and innovative ideas to help communities solve their present and future challenges. Our work is not just about making cities more efficient; it is about finding solutions that benefit all people. We have collaborated on urban sustainability work all over the country, and our current priorities include water infrastructure, equitable transportation-oriented development (eTOD), and climate resilience. Our projects, such as the Great Lakes Water Infrastructure Project, show that urban efficiency, poverty reduction, and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Last week Peter Haas attended the 2024 Transportation and Climate Symposium at U.S. Department of Transportation headquarters in DC. It was a great event filled with panel discussions and presentations on how the current administration is working across federal agencies - DOT along with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) - as well as state and local agencies to combat climate change. A high point was a panel on Equitable Transit-Oriented Development financing and location efficient housing as a climate strategy. Michael Freedberg of HUD (and former CNT staffer, in photo above) asked moderator Alexis Pelosi and panelists if there’s interest in defining affordability using both transportation and housing costs, perhaps using the Location Affordability Index tool we assisted HUD to develop about 10 years ago (https://lnkd.in/gCT_6JEc). Harriet Tregoning, currently a senior advisor to USDOT (and former CNT partner) had an excellent response, Peter said: “Harriet shared that people in DC own fewer cars than the region as a whole, because they have great access to both transit and everyday conveniences—a great description of the location efficiency we talk about in our H+T and other tools.” Recorded sessions from the day are here: https://lnkd.in/eYxAY4WH
