Anti-abortion extremists are once again spreading dangerous misinformation—this time, falsely claiming that its possible to “reverse” the first steps of medication abortion by taking the hormone progesterone. Major medical organizations and legitimate researchers consider the process “unproven and unethical” but that hasn't stopped extremists from touting it. And we see this effort for what it really is: a stigmatizing campaign, designed to stoke fear in abortion care seekers that they'll regret their decision down the line. In fact, the Turnaway Study, a five-year study examining the health and socioeconomic consequences of having an abortion in the US found just the opposite: five years after getting abortion care, 99% of women say they made the right choice for them. We don't need fake, pseudoscientific methods to "reverse abortion," we need to expand access to basic health care and trust pregnant people to make the decisions about their lives and futures that are right for THEM. #EndAbortionStigma
Center for Reproductive Rights
Law Practice
The Center for Reproductive Rights uses the power of law to advance reproductive rights as fundamental human rights.
About us
For over 25 years, the Center for Reproductive Rights has used the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill. Since 1992, our attorneys have boldly used legal and human rights tools to create this world. We are the only global legal advocacy organization dedicated to reproductive rights, with expertise in both U.S. constitutional and international human rights law. Our groundbreaking cases before national courts, United Nations committees, and regional human rights bodies have expanded access to reproductive healthcare, including birth control, safe abortion, prenatal and obstetric care, and unbiased information. We influence the law outside the courtroom as well, documenting abuses, working with policymakers to promote progressive measures, and fostering legal scholarship and teaching on reproductive health and human rights. We are legal innovators seeking to fundamentally transform the landscape of reproductive health and rights worldwide, and have already strengthened laws and policies in more than 50 countries. Help us realize every woman's right to reproductive health and autonomy.

OUTRAGEOUS: No one should be imprisoned for seeking health care, PERIOD. Ms. Gonzalez never should have been put through this trauma and those responsible MUST be held to account.

🚨TODAY: Iowa’s extreme abortion ban has taken effect. It prohibits abortion care after just 6 weeks—before many even know they’re pregnant. Doctors who violate the law could face class D felony charges, fines, and even the loss of their medical license. And while the law claims to make exceptions for rape, incest, lethal fetal conditions, and the life of the pregnant person, we already know that so-called “exceptions” have not worked in other states where abortion is banned. Many people, including several of our plaintiffs, have endured senseless trauma because of similar bans in different states—some were forced to the brink of death before they got care and some were forced to carry pregnancies they knew wouldn’t survive to term. Others even lost their fertility. “We already know how Iowans will be hurt because it’s currently a grim reality in vast swaths of the South and Mid-West,” said Center for Reproductive Rights Presenidt and CEO Nancy Northup. “Patients will be forced to travel hundreds of miles from home to find abortion care, if they have the means to do so. Others will be forced to carry pregnancies to term, regardless of their determination of what is best for their lives, health, families, and future. People with dire pregnancy complications will be turned away from hospitals until they are crashing.” To put it simply, it is now dangerous to be pregnant in Iowa. But as countless patients and providers throughout the state venture into this new unknown, one thing remains certain: we NEED federal protections for our reproductive rights. We NEED Congress to pass legislation that ensures abortion access nationwide and we NEED them to do it now. If you agree, click here and urge action:

“One of the best ways to restrict abortion is to not educate people about what their sexual rights are, about their own bodies, how to advocate for themselves, where to get good health care." —Eva Goldfarb, professor of public health at Montclair State University specializing in comprehensive sexuality education.

DEVASTATING: Iowa's 6-week abortion ban will take effect tomorrow. The law was temporarily blocked by a judge last year, but this June, the state’s Supreme Court ultimately ruled that "neither text nor history establishes abortion as a fundamental right under the Iowa Constitution." Now, the 3+ million people in the state will be living under one of the nation’s strictest bans. Let us be clear: this will be devastating. People across the state are not only losing access to essential health care, they’re losing their fundamental right to reproductive freedom. To the people of Iowa, know that we stand with you and know that we are fighting across the globe every single day to expand, restore, and protect your right to make your own decisions about your own bodies and lives.
