Californians in Imperial Valley are traveling to Mexico for health care for respiratory illness, from cheap inhalers to specialized surgery. The area has the highest rates of emergency room visits for kids with asthma. We heard stories of transnational health care over and over when Philip Salata hosted listening sessions in Calipatria and Calexico last month. Residents told us: It's not just cheaper; it's better care. Philip recently joined a young man on his visit to a Mexicali doctor. Here's his story, written as part of his fellowship with USC Center for Health Journalism.
I would never have imagined that reporting on respiratory health care issues in Imperial Valley would land me in a hair salon in Mexicali, a cathedral and face to face with a plate of chilaquiles.
