As Central New York continues to grow, so does the need for a skilled workforce in the building trades. However, women and people of color are often underrepresented in these careers. That's why programs like Syracuse Build's Pathways to Apprenticeship are so important. Ebony Farrow, the program manager, has been instrumental in the success of the program. She has led multiple cohorts to completion and is actively recruiting for the next one. Ebony joins Talk CNY, sponsored by NBT Bank, to highlight the program’s achievements and its impact on the community. NY SMART I-Corridor named official U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hub designee. This high-tech corridor, which includes Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, will receive $40 million to support the creation of the “NY Semiconductor Superhighway.” Special thanks to Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Congressman Joe Morelle for their support, which has been instrumental in securing the NY SMART I-Corridor's designation as a national Tech Hub. Leading companies like Edwards Vacuum, Corning Incorporated, AMD, D3, Optimax Systems, Inc., and Rochester Precision Optics are drawn to the Greater #RochesterNY region due to its talented workforce, university-led R&D assets, and unique concentration of advanced manufacturing, sensing, optics, photonics, and imaging expertise. This designation, coupled with the anticipated financial support, will further accelerate the region's robust semiconductor supply chain ecosystem and drive innovation. Greater Rochester Enterprise looks forward to working with federal, state, and local partners to leverage this investment in support of more business growth and job creation throughout the region. The NY SMART I-Corridor was selected as one of only 12 Tech Hub award winners and will bring $40 million in federal funding to the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse-Ithaca I-Corridor. This investment puts the region in an unequivocal position to accelerate our strategies for growth, and further solidifies this Upstate NY corridor as a global leader of semiconductor innovation, manufacturing, workforce training and business attraction. This is a firm signal to the world that this region is primed to lead the resurgence of advanced manufacturing and semiconductor production in the U.S., which will help address the vulnerabilities in this national priority by building on our historic strengths in manufacturing and unique expertise in microelectronics, sensing and optics. The NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub, comprised of Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, has been awarded a $40 million federal grant to advance semiconductor research, manufacturing, and workforce development in Upstate NY. Supported by over 100 partners from industry, academia, and government, this initiative will boost local businesses and create new job opportunities. The goal is for our region to produce 25% of all U.S.-made semiconductors by the end of the decade, reducing dependency on foreign supply chains for this crucial component. We extend our sincere thanks to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Joe Morelle, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and Empire State Development, our partners from across the state, particularly Joseph Stefko, President of OneROC, Buffalo Niagara Partnership, CenterState CEO and project leads Monroe Community College, University at Buffalo, and Syracuse University. What an amazing day for #GreaterROC and our entire region. Today, U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Economic Development Administration announced that the Rochester-Buffalo-Syracuse corridor's NY SMART I-Corridor was among the first in the nation to receive implementation funding to bring our tech hub vision to life. This journey began almost three years ago, when we set out to build a new, coordinated vision -- one focused on advancing semiconductor production and supply chain -- to leverage the opportunity created by the fact that over the next decade one in four US-made semiconductor chips will be produced within 350 miles of our region. No other place in the country will account for a greater share of domestic production. The targeted investments this funding enables -- in workforce, innovation, and advanced manufacturing -- position our region to lead the way in end-to-end semiconductor manufacturing. And in so doing, expand economic opportunity for all. Today's announcement validates the power of working collaboratively. The power of partnership. When we work together, WE WIN. I'm indebted to the 100 organizations that came together to bring this vision to life -- and in the process, created a groundbreaking new framework for regional collaboration. First among them are my leadership colleagues Robert M. Simpson, Dottie Gallagher, and Ben Sio from CenterState CEO and Buffalo Niagara Partnership. I'm especially grateful to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, whose vision created this opportunity and whose relentless push made our bid the most compelling anywhere in the country. Also, to Rep. Joseph Morelle, whose fierce and consistent advocacy ensured our bid rose to the top. To our partners in state government: Gov. Kathy Hochul and the team at Empire State Development, whose strategic guidance has been instrumental. To President Biden, Secretary Raimondo and her team, U.S. Economic Development Administration, and the entire CHIPS program office: We are enormously grateful for the confidence you've placed in our bid and our ability to advance both national security and economic growth. And we are ready to deliver. Over the past year, we've gone from 400 initial applicants ... to 31 finalists ... and now have risen to the top. It is affirmation that this place MATTERS. Don't let anyone tell you we can't do big things in this region, or that we can't compete with any place in the world. We're already doing it, it's happening all around us, and this announcement validates what we've known all along: Our region is poised to lead the way for generations to come. As the *only* funded tech hub in semiconductors, the federal government has made a significant bet on our region. It's the latest proof point that we're flipping the script, meeting the moment, and creating transformational opportunity. I am so proud to call this place home. I couldn't be more energized about our shared future. And I am excited to get to work.

When we work together we win. Deep thanks to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for his steadfast leadership in writing the Chips and Science Act, passing it in to law with bipartisan support and delivering this important win for Upstate NY. Thanks to OneROC and the Buffalo Niagara Partnership for their partnership in co-convening this application and to Joseph Stefko and Dottie Gallagher in particular for their friendship and can-do approach to hard things. Upstate New York is now the only federally-funded semi-conductor Tech Hub in the nation. The future of the most important input to the modern economy and our national security — semi-conductors — now runs through the Smart-I corridor. Upstate New York is regaining its global relevance. Upstate New York matters again.
