Open Letter to the CEOC Community about Mental Health As business leaders, we have the privilege and responsibility to have a positive impact, not only on the companies we lead but also on the communities in which we live and work. Mental health issues affect people from all walks of life, transcending age, gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. They also have profound implications for workplace productivity, employee engagement, and overall organizational success. It is stunning to me that in this day and age despite the progress made in understanding mental health, there is still a stigma attached to mental illness and access to effective mental healthcare remains a significant challenge. It is unbelievable to me that when faced with a mental health challenge most people are forced to reinvent the wheel; starting from scratch to figure out how to help themselves or their loved ones. It is unacceptable to me that many do not know where to turn and few have the right combination of skillsets, bandwidth, resources, and connections necessary to access everything they need. What if we could change that? We may not be able to cure mental illness, but I believe that by combining the resources of the mid-market we can provide access to care that can change people’s lives. To that end, today, as CEO of CEO Connection, I am forming a taskforce of mid-market CEOs to create access for CEO Connection members, their families and their employees who are impacted by mental illness to resources they cannot get on their own that will: - Enhance their ability to understand their situation and destigmatize mental illness, - Find and access the right doctors as well as quality mental health services, - Receive state of the art treatments, and - Deal with the potential results Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world….” Imagine what the leadership of the mid-market can do together.
