During our Orange county community office hours, we spoke with representatives from the Orange County Free Clinic, the Green Alliance of Church/Community Efforts (GRACE), and the Culpeper Wellness Foundation. Coincidentally, the majority of those who attended work in community health and wellness, ensuring underserved community members, including the many migrant and seasonal workers employed by farms and wineries in the region, are able to receive the medical care they need. We loved visiting Orange county and learning about the many initiatives taking place. If you missed us, we'll be back again in the fall. Over the past few months, we welcomed three new board members to our Governing Board: Charles Lewis, Josephus Allmond, and Ashleigh O’Brien. Charles is the founder of several organizations, serves with the Black Professionals Network, and co-hosts the community talk show, In My Humble Opinion. Charles serves as a Senior Unified Communications Engineer with UVA Health. Josephus is an Associate Attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center, where he lobbies at the Virginia General Assembly on solar and clean energy issues, and serves as the Chair of the 100 Black Men of Central Virginia. Ashleigh is Director of Sustainable Investments at CornerStone Partners. She is experienced in impact investing, and understands the complexities of different financing approaches that must be tailored for communities. We're grateful to have such talented, deeply knowledgeable, and community-focused individuals on our board. Read more about them here: https://lnkd.in/eBAcvuCt

We kicked off June with a visit to Buckingham county, home of Carter G. Woodson, and a sprawling history (and present!) of Black resistance. We heard from community members who are working on creating a Buckingham Black History Museum to archive their family's collections, community members revamping spaces for early childhood care, and others restoring historical structures to better serve their communities. One of our staff members, Justin G. Reid calls Buckingham home, and there's nothing more beautiful than seeing how community members light up when they realize someone from CACF shares their experience. We had a packed room, and felt an immense amount of gratitude and excitement for the dreams, work, and dedication of those who attended our community office hours, and the many communities they represent. We'll be back in Buckingham in the fall. Sign up for our newsletter to follow us along on our journey: https://lnkd.in/guay3gEJ

Charlottesville Area Community Foundation reposted this
We proudly announce the Charles J Lewis III Resilience Education Fund, honoring the Lewis Family’s nephew. This new fund will be managed by Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. “The Resilience Education program is an incredible aid in helping those who have been incarcerated transition back into society with the skill sets and support that will enable them to be productive. Growing up in Lynchburg, VA, I was taught to make sure we left this world a little better than we found it. To this end and in remembrance of Chuckie, we established this fund. During my life, I have invested in many different things, but I know none of them will have a greater return than this one,” said Lemuel Lewis. Thanks to the generosity of Lem and Sandra, we will be able to continue growing our education and professional development programs as well as other key initiatives.
