Improving the Chesapeake Bay watershed through environmental education, community outreach, & on-the-ground restoration.

About us

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a nonprofit, grantmaking organization dedicated to improving the waterways and other natural resources of Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region. Our goal is to improve our watershed by focusing on three core objectives: environmental education, community outreach, and on-the-ground restoration. On average, the Trust awards, on average, $20-30 million per year in grants to better local communities and the Bay. We reach more than 250,000 individuals annually who are making a difference for our waters and for the natural resources of our region. Our reason is simple: we believe that getting individuals involved is the key to restoring the Chesapeake Bay and our rivers and streams. The Trust is supported by the sale of the Treasure the Chesapeake license plate, donations to the Chesapeake Bay and Endangered Species Fund on the Maryland State income tax form, donations from individuals and corporations, and partnerships with private foundations and federal, state, and local agencies such as Anne Arundel County. The Trust continually earns a 4-star charity rating, the highest possible by Charity Navigator, a national charity evaluator. Ninety-two cents of every dollar goes directly to projects and educational programs in the community.

“Wood” you believe that trees can save your life? In a recent article published by NBC News, researchers at the University of Louisville report that “people living in neighborhoods with twice as many trees and shrubs had lower levels of a blood marker associated with heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer compared with those who lived in more tree-bare neighborhoods.” Read on! https://lnkd.in/evMDANgg #TreeTuesday #ImportanceOfTrees #EmpoweringPeople #RestoringNature

Join us on September 24th at 12:00pm to discuss Two-dimensional (2D) Hydrodynamic Modeling in Stream Restoration with Jesse Robinson from the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering. 2D hydrodynamic models are an established tool used in the design of stream restoration projects in the Chesapeake Bay. The primary application of 2D models in restoration is to evaluate restoration project vulnerabilities during extreme flood events. Although 2D model use is widespread, minimal data is available regarding the reliability of model outputs applied to stream restoration design. This study begins to address this knowledge gap by evaluating the reliability of 2D models in five restoration sites within the coastal plain of the Chesapeake Bay. ➡️Register here to learn more: https://bit.ly/PMFSessions

Drumroll… announcing the revamped “Bays” Plate! Earlier this week, in partnership with District 38 State Senator Mary Beth Carozza, Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA), and Maryland Coastal Bays Program, we revealed an updated design for the Maryland bay license plate. Funds from this license plate have long been invested in both the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays; now the new design reflects that emphasis on the Coastal Bays as well! We revealed this new design at the Assateague State Park Living Shoreline, an example of a local project made possible thanks to the bay plate. The modified license plate will help us continue to empower hundreds of community-based grantees every year who want to play a role in protecting and restoring natural resources to take local, on-the-ground action to protect the environment. Give your car a cause and order your Bays Plate today! The “Protect the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays” license plate can now be purchased for $20 through an MDOT MVA branch, car dealerships, tag and title agencies, and at the Chesapeake Bay Trust website. Be "car-ful" not to miss what others are saying about the Bays Plate upgrade: https://lnkd.in/g3f8c8qx

Join the Chesapeake Bay Trust and the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays's Director, Meghan Noe Fellows, for one of Pooled Monitoring Initiative’s Restoration Research Project Webinars: Reforestation Restoration Success – Measuring Early Forest Development After Land Disturbance with Soil Chemistry and Understory Vegetation. Loss of mature forest during stream restoration may be one of the most controversial and socially unacceptable costs of water-quality driven stream restoration projects. Where forest removal is unavoidable, the modified applied nucleation approach to forest restoration can speed return of forest function in riparian forests. After only five years, applied nucleation improved tree canopy, soil organic matter and leaf litter cover as compared with forest, unplanted and traditional planting techniques known as “plantation.” At the most compacted sites, applied nucleation improved bulk density. For the restoration goal of buffer function post stream restoration, planting>not planting and applied nucleation>traditional reforestation practice. ➡️Register at http://bit.ly/4cGOpPF
