Some systems at RWJBarnabas Health have been impacted by the Global Microsoft outage. This is not a cyberattack. Our teams are working to remediate the issue as soon as possible. As always, patient safety is our highest priority. Out of an abundance of caution, we are delaying some scheduled procedures until this situation is resolved and will share updates as they are available. Thank you for your patience. #LetsBeHealthyTogether

  • This week was a knockout for our True Grit Spinal Cord Injury Program participants! 🥊👏 Thank you to Donahue Fields for showing our participants how boxing can help them gain strength and confidence. The True Grit Spinal Cord Program, presented by Children's Specialized Hospital and Rutgers School of Health Professions, hosted a five-day residential program on Rutgers University's Livingston Campus. The program provides campers with spinal cord injuries (SCI) the opportunity to gain independence by staying in a dorm with the support of therapists. The program includes peer mentorship, individualized occupational and physical therapy sessions, goal-directed intervention, group therapy, exercise, strength-based SCI education, higher education exploration, vocational rehabilitation consultation, and adapted leisure and recreation activities. • On today's #HumansofCSH, we'd like to introduce you to Mountainside Long Term Care Recreational Therapist Amy Schiano! "One of the happiest moments of my career thus far is becoming a facility dog handler to Gallop. Ever since becoming a recreation therapist, I always wanted to either be a handler or have a therapy dog that I can utilize in my sessions. When the opportunity was presented to be a handler, I could not say no! I am so grateful for the generosity and support of the Margaret and Peter Chang Foundation and Mickey’s Kids Foundation to have Gallop part of our everyday life here in long term care. Gallop is always with me when we do room visits with our residents and families, group activities, or individual sessions. Like most recreation therapists in our profession, I did not know recreation therapy was a profession until I was a sophomore in college. In high school, I volunteered with our local community groups and enjoyed special events with all types of special populations. I knew then I always wanted to help people, so I decided healthcare was where I wanted to be even though, as a child, I was scared of hospitals. However, recreation therapy brings out the best in a person as our goal is to rediscover our purpose and what brings fun and happiness in life regardless of our functioning or diagnosis. I am proud to be a recreation therapist and glad that I chose this career path. Being a recreation therapist is self-rewarding and, of course, fun!" Did you know a certified recreation therapist credential is CTRS? • This Disability Pride Month, we’re celebrating the strength and resilience of individuals with disabilities and commemorating the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed in 1990. Nyla was diagnosed with Lissencephaly at two days old, a rare condition that affects only 1 in 100,000 babies. Children with Lissencephaly often have difficulty reaching milestones such as crawling, sitting, speaking, and eating. 🌟Since coming to CSH, Nyla’s parents aren’t letting the impossibilities of her disability stop her. This summer, she is enjoying fun in the sun independently with the help of her pool float! You go, Nyla! 😎💦 Read Nyla’s Story at https://ow.ly/7orb50SzKK2 and give today to give more moments of pride to CSH patients and families! 💙 #childrensspecnj #disabilitypridemonth #lissencephaly #funinthesun
