Dr. Grace Firestone has been climbing massive mountains in Peru these past two weeks for CWS. Her goal – to raise funds and bring awareness to those who face unjust obstacles to healthcare, food, and safety. This week she embarks on her final trek - a 19,795 foot climb of Mt. Tocllaraju. With Rock climbing gear, ice axes and a guide, she makes this difficult challenge in solidarity with those who face treacherous journeys to find work, clean water, medical care and protection. She has the supplies she needs to succeed and is raising funds so that others, often overlooked communities, will have the support they need to overcome obstacles and build healthy lives. Today, Senator Edward J. Markey, alongside Representatives Grace Meng, Delia Ramirez, and Adriano Espaillat, introduced the Destination Reception Assistance Act. This legislation aims to establish the Destination Reception Services Program to support new immigrants by promoting self-sufficiency, reducing emergency shelter costs, and facilitating effective navigation of the immigration process. The act complements existing FEMA programs and seeks to provide critical resources such as housing, legal aid, and workforce development, thereby easing the burden on local governments and non-profits. When an ordinary day takes a turn for the worse, vulnerable families like Marta's face huge challenges navigating a natural disaster. However, through valuable collaboration with Airbnb, we managed to secure temporary shelter for Marta and her family. CWS is thankful for the generosity of Airbnb.org, whose support has allowed hundreds of our newest neighbors to receive temporary housing as they establish their new permanent homes. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, CWS partnered with Reach Out America in Pearland, TX, to distribute essential supplies to our neighbors in need. With support from the CWS community, we distributed CWS Blankets, Hygiene Kits and Emergency Cleanup Buckets to those affected by the hurricane. We extend our gratitude to our kits supporters who enable us to step in and respond during any disaster. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3yjDr3t

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of co-hosting the Prayer Fest at the Vietnamese Alliance Church of Harrisburg. Our event, themed "Abounding Love," brought together believers from the lower Northeast region for a day of unity and worship. We welcomed six other Vietnamese Alliance Churches and were inspired by the generosity of our community, raising $2,700 worth of donations for families supported by CWS Harrisburg. Reverend Khoa Le's blessing captured the spirit of the day, reminding us of our mission to embody God's love through our actions. Events like this highlight the strength and resilience of our immigrant community. #PrayerFest #AboundingLove #CWSHarrisburg Read more: https://bit.ly/3y7VEB3

🗣️At the end of June, World Relief, Church World Service & The Refugee Advocacy Lab hosted #NorthCarolina Advocacy Day! Refugee leaders & community members from across the state met with elected leaders to call on them to support a bill that would provide licenses for internationally-trained teachers & increase language access at the DMV. We look forward to working with the General Assembly and our partners again next year to make these solutions a reality.

We often hear about global issues from a distant perspective, but our view changes when we hear directly from people on the ground. One of these individuals is Mercidieu Josaphat, who is the coordinator of a CWS partner organization in Jean Rebel Dos d’Ane, Northwest Haiti. Mercidieu lives with his wife, three children, and two cousins. Like many Haitians, he sees the complexity of his country: a place that he loves, but one with many challenges.
