Last weekend (Aug. 22-24), the City of Charlotte hosted the 49th Annual Summer Conference of the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks at the beautiful Ballantyne Hotel. There was record attendance at the annual conference with approximately 167 registered city, town, and village clerks from across the state. This year’s conference theme was “One Person Can Make a Difference,” and in keeping with that theme, attendees demonstrated just that... Each year, the host clerk is asked to identify a local community service project that conference attendees can support with contributions. City Clerk Stephanie C. Kelly chose Classroom Central, an organization dedicated to supporting teachers and students in need by providing free school supplies and essential teacher resources. Kelly is pictured alongside Deputy City Clerk Billie Fruit-Tynes with the generous donations from conference attendees. This weekend (Aug. 29-31), Charlotte will host the inaugural National Pastry Conference at The Park Expo and Conference Center. This first-of-its-kind event is poised to bring international chefs and businesses to the Queen City, and its all thanks to Justin Fry of JF Chocolat. Recognizing a void in the American pastry landscape, Fry decided to combine his love for chocolate with his love for Charlotte and start #PastryCon, which he hopes will stay here in for years to come. Get to know Fry and Tonia Bryant of Sweet Peony Wedding Cakes, who will be competing in one of PastryCon's many competitions, in our exclusive interview. Want to learn more about PastryCon? Thinking about attending and seeing some of the incredible creations yourself? Head to pastrycon.com!

The Mayor's Youth Employment Program (MYEP) offered more than 450 paid, work-based learning opportunities for high school students this summer. Internships like this offer hands-on experience, introducing students to new careers and giving them practical experience in areas in which they are interested. The exposure students gain during MYEP helps them discover their career interests and allows them to explore traditional and unconventional roles early on.
