Day 8 of the @NYSFair is in full swing, celebrating Women's Day and Governor's Day today! Governor Kathy Hochul stopped by the Fair for a Women's Day brunch before making way to several exhibits across the fairgrounds with other local leaders including Mayor Walsh and Deputy Mayor Owens. In true fair fashion, no visit is complete without a Basilio's sausage sandwich. Get out and enjoy the fair now until Sept. 2!

Today Mayor Walsh and County Executive McMahon joined Honorable Franklin Parker, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, and Rear Admiral Josh Jackson as well as members of the Navy to kick off Navy Week in Syracuse! Mayor Walsh visited the NYS Fairgrounds for Law Enforcement Day yesterday, and Fire, Rescue & EMS Day today to take part in ceremonies paying tribute to the brave first responders who have given their lives, and who continue to put their lives on the line for the safety and health of our communities each day. Your courage does not go unnoticed, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Mayor Walsh and Syracuse Fire Department Chief Monds announced the appointment of 27-year veteran Elton Davis to Executive Deputy Chief of Fire. Davis’ new leadership role includes planning, organizing and providing oversight to firefighting and administrative operations in all facets of the Department. Chief Monds says, “Chief Davis has a proven track record and possesses the insight, skillset and leadership necessary for this position. He has been an example of dedication and safety in every role he has served in our department. He will have the responsibility of acting as the Fire Chief in my absence and I could not be more confident in his abilities.” “Syracuse is a safer city because of Chief Davis’ dedicated service. His commitment to fire prevention in homes, businesses, schools, places of worship, stadiums, and buildings of all types is exemplary. Throughout his career, he has made the protection of others his number one priority. That has earned the respect of people throughout our community and among his fellow fire professionals. The Department of Neighborhood and Business Development is seeking feedback from residents and agencies to determine housing and community development priorites over the next five years. Information gathered from two Housing and Neighborhood Surveys will help the department assess neighborhood needs and identify strategic priorities for distributing federal funds. The City of Syracuse Department of Neighborhood and Business Development will host a public input meeting to hear from residents about the Syracuse Housing Strategy. The meeting takes place on Wed. Aug. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at Soule Branch Library. Read more at syr.gov/news

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the appointment of Laura Spence to Assistant Director of Purchase. Spence is responsible for overseeing the procurement of all materials, services and construction needs. She will also create and implement procurement processes to comply with City ordinances and advise on updates to relevant policies and procedures. Read more at syr.gov/news

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the appointment of Vaughn Davis as the Assistant Director of Equity Compliance in the Office of Management and Budget.
