Since joining City Ventures as a Land Acquisition and Development Associate post-grad last summer, my passion for this industry has grown tremendously. I never realized how much work actually goes into the acquisition, entitlement, and permitting process until I was the one completing applications, communicating with cities, and engaging consultants. It has been a pleasure to work alongside such incredible mentors and I am grateful to have the opportunity to learn something new every day. What I appreciate so much about this job is every day is different, and its all about flexibility and creativity. I also appreciate the unique position I was given to be able to learn and explore all elements of the development process, so I not only source and negotiate deals, but also help manage the land use change process. Congratulations on your work anniversary at City Ventures, Nicholas Patterson. And thank you for sharing your story. “After graduating from Miami University (Ohio), I was uncertain about my career path, but real estate had always piqued my interest. Growing up, I loved watching my dad work in industrial real estate and learning about his projects. The sheer size and scale of the deals gave me a deep appreciation for the field. Working in a team setting to rejuvenate forgotten or abandoned landscapes was something I could envision building a career around. Additionally, my mom is an interior designer, and as a kid, I often helped her build and install furniture in custom homes. Observing the unique thoughtfulness behind every detail solidified my decision to pursue a career in residential real estate. I started my career at a multifamily residential development and property management company in Minneapolis, MN. During my time there, I gained a solid foundation in real estate development by being as hands-on as possible. After nearly four years in Minneapolis, I was ready for a new challenge, both professionally and personally. I had friends in Southern California, and after visiting them a few times, I began to envision myself living there and starting a new chapter. I researched real estate companies and discovered City Ventures as they were building projects throughout the state. Fortunately, they were hiring for a Land Acquisition role. I had a virtual meeting with Ryan Aeh, who explained City Ventures' mission, and we decided that I would be a better fit on the project management side of the business. Before securing the job, I drove to California for the final in-person interview. Thankfully, I was offered the role of Development Associate in August 2023. I spent my first few weeks learning about City Ventures' processes, the differences between development in California vs. Minnesota, and meeting the amazing people at the company. Over the next few months, I was given more responsibility. And in the year, I have been with City Ventures, I've had two board-approved projects, with several more in the pipeline. The company's strong sense of community, where everyone works towards the same goal and supports each other, is something I appreciate daily and look forward to in my future here. With the support and confidence of Ryan Aeh and Kim Prijatel, I was promoted to Director of Development recently. Knowing that they believe in me is something I am very grateful for as I continue my journey with City Ventures. I look forward to carrying these projects through to completion and growing my relationships with all of the people that are involved.” #buildingcommunity #thatcvlife

A City Ventures Success Story Zachary Forbath began his internship at our City Ventures SoCal office in the summer of 2023, just before starting his senior year studying Political Economy with a concentration in Financial Economics at UC Berkeley. During Zach’s internship, he worked with one of our SoCal Land Teams lead by Michelle Thrakulchavee. Zach’s success and eagerness to learn led him to extend his internship into the school year, working on projects and supporting the team from afar and eventually become a full-time employee after graduating with a BA in May 2024. When asked why he wanted to continue with City Ventures, Zach stated: “Interning at City Ventures was an incredible experience, so much so that I was lucky enough to come back and work as a full-time employee. During my internship, I focused primarily on the land acquisition side, where I gained valuable insights into the acquisition process. One of the main reasons I wanted to return to City Ventures full-time was the immense learning opportunities I experienced as an intern. Michelle’s analogy of being a “sponge” truly resonated with me—absorbing knowledge and insights from my colleagues was, and still is, key to my development. Additionally, the supportive environment at City Ventures was remarkable; everyone I worked with was always willing to take time out of their day to teach me, whether by explaining concepts I was unfamiliar with or inviting me to participate in important calls. Now that I have transitioned to the development/project management side of deals, I’ve found that same level of support and willingness to help from the team, which has been invaluable as I continue to grow. I believe that City Ventures is the best place for me to cultivate the skills necessary to become a successful project manager, and I’m excited to contribute to our projects while learning from such a talented group.” We are thrilled to welcome Zach to the team and are excited to see what the future holds! #buildingcommunity #thatcvlife #hiringandpromotion

They were exposed to collaboration opportunities and meeting new coworkers they haven't met before. Last week our Homebuilding team took over Pro Five Brewery to go over our second quarter progress and discuss our plan for the rest of the year.
