    September 8-14 is National Suicide Prevention Week. Suicide prevention is a topic very close to the heart of Civilian, and over the past ten years we've had the opportunity to work on suicide prevention awareness campaigns through the California Mental Health Services Authority, Riverside University Health System, and California Department of Public Health. Suicide Prevention Week is not only a time to raise awareness, but to share messages of hope. If you or a loved one is experiencing thoughts of suicide, you are not alone. Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline 24/7 to speak with a trained professional who can help.

On October 3–4, Civilian will be at the 2024 NAMI California Annual Conference sharing insights on Never a Bother, California's premier statewide youth suicide prevention campaign. Our Director of Strategy & Insights, Camellia Mortezazadeh, will be joined with one of our youth advisors and representatives from the California Department of Health and The Center at Sierra Health Foundation. We're so excited to take part in this important conference, and share our exciting learnings from working with over 300 BIPOC youth and young adults in creating this campaign.     At Civilian, we believe in the power of education to drive meaningful change. Recently, our team had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Native cultural awareness training with The Social Changery that deepened our understanding of the rich history, culture, and modern impact of Native people. Our team at Civilian is now more equipped to approach our work with a deeper appreciation and understanding of Native cultures. We're committed to fostering respectful and informed partnerships, and this training is a significant step towards that goal. A heartfelt thank you to Jeanine Gaines (Citizen Potawatomi Nation/Kaw) and Dayna Barrios, M.A. (Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Mission Indians) for sharing their knowledge and experiences with us. Together, we can build a more inclusive and understanding world.

    Our "Never a Bother" youth suicide prevention campaign for California Department of Public Health's Office of Suicide Prevention won top honors this year. The thing is, we didn't just consult with youth — we co-created it with them (over 400 youth between ages 16 to 25 to be exact!). Here's what we learned along the way.
