Need to backfill an un-braced wall that's not designed to be a retaining wall? On this 14' tall basement wall, CJGeo backfilled in three lifts with 25lb/cuft CJFill-Ultra Lightweight cellular concrete minimized lateral loads to the point where the wall could be backfilled without bracing. Afterwards, the floor slabs were poured directly on top of the CJFill-UL cellular concrete. The entire backfilling operation took three days, and eliminated all passive earth pressure off of the basement wall, which significantly reduced costs. Shout out to all the hardworking professionals out there VE-ing underdrains out of grade crossings! CJGeo recently tackled a challenge in Tennessee where a modular grade crossing deflected due to saturation of the underlying base material. This caused the panels to act like diaphragm pumps, pumping out a bunch of base material and causing the crossing to settle up to three inches. The nearby truck stop and restaurant began fielding customer complaints, and the railroad put a slow order on the crossing. Working with a local MOW contractor, CJGeo was able to lift all 12 crossing panels back to their original grade before the Bojangles lunch rush. The team used CJGrout 48NHL, known for its 4x FOS for heavy haul rail crossings. This grout can be injected directly into water without impacting its physical properties, cures within a few minutes, and has just enough elasticity to not break apart like cementitious grouts do in high dynamic loading environments. #maintenanceofway #railwayinfrastructure #geotechnicalengineering #civilengineering #railroads

CJGeo, in partnership with Garney Construction, Drill Tech Drilling & Shoring, Inc., and design engineer Hazen and Sawyer, has kicked off a significant milestone this week. A collaborative effort between Fairfax Water - Official, Prince William County Service Authority, and Virginia American Water Company. The project aims to increase drinking water capacity in Prince William County and update/replace aging potable water transmission mains. 25MGD is a decent size treatment plant. 25MGD is a really big leak. In this case, into a mine via multiple in-stream sinkholes in karst geology near West Virginia. Of course the river was full of endangered fish, sinkholes were opening up around a bridge that was the only access to a handful of houses, and it was March 2020, when schools were "only going to be closed for a week or two". The mine was taking on close to 10 vertical feet a day of water beyond their dewatering capacity. After attempting to self-perform chemical grouting, the mine reached out to CJGeo about putting a bit more grouting firepower onsite. Over a few days onsite, we placed about 7500 gallons of CJGrout 35NHV61 potable water certified geotechnical polyurethane into six different sinkholes. This brought the infiltration back down to below the capacity of the mine's dewatering system, without impacting water quality or access to the houses, and stopped movement of the bridge. #mining #civilengineering #geotechnicalengineering #structuralengineering
