The Climate Drift Career Accelerator for mid-career & executives kicked off. The first round of feedback is solid 🔥 Here are my top 3 from our members: 1️⃣ “I’ve gotten tremendous value out of the course; specifically the action-oriented nature of the course (learning + doing, not just learning) and the orientation towards landing a career in climate and HOW to do it” 2️⃣ “The quality and access to the speakers so far has been unparalleled (and I've done programs with [multiple other climate education programs]).” 3️⃣ 10 out of 10: The content is in-depth and interesting, and gives the cohort opportunities to get involved by tackling challenges hands-on (which in my opinion, is the best way to learn!) If you want to make a difference and bring your talent into climate. Apply to our May ’24 cohort and join the Climate Drift community. Our Climate Drift members asked for more time. And I can’t believe we didn’t think of this earlier 🤦♂️ Context: During our 8-week accelerator we meet for daily sessions. Either to dive deep into a climate sub-sector. Learn directly from a Climate VC (Elemental, RMI, etc.) or leader in climate tech. Tackle specific climate tech company challenges. Or run through the Climate Drift Career Transition Playbook (e.g. “leading with value”). But throughout the last several weeks, there wasn’t a single call that we finished on time 😱 Is that bad? Hell no! I am a big believer that when you have a great discussion going. You don’t blow the whistle and call “game over”. You keep going, ride the momentum and answer as many questions as possible. If a few people need to drop off and catch the recording afterwards. That’s fine. But obviously everyone wants to stay engaged. And nobody wants to leave “early”. And don’t get me wrong: Having an engaged community like this, is what I dreamt of when we started Climate Drift. So we’re simply adding a 30 minute buffer after each session. Hopefully that’ll keep everyone’s calendar blocked and avoid people missing out on the “in the moment” energy. Huge thank you to all of our members for continuing to make Climate Drift better 🙏 Let’s go! 🙌

I talked future plans with a High Schooler. 2 things made me go: “Holy cow, I love the next generation!” 🤩 Here’s the essence of our conversation: 1️⃣ Climate is Global. So you need to look beyond your own country. During her first year in high school she flew out to Sweden. Visiting one of their best Universities to understand how adaptable their sustainability programs are. “I don’t want to learn something that’s outdated by the time I graduate.” She did a similar discovery trip to the Netherlands. Me: Why Europe? Answer: Why would I go into crazy debt for a degree in a country that lags behind Europe when it comes to climate education? Me: (speechless) 😳 2️⃣ Gap Years don’t sound cool, until you do them. She got accepted into her European target university under the condition of doing a gap year first. So she looked into what she could do. Found the Americorps program. Got accepted. Now she’s literally learning how to fight and prevent wildfires next to lifelong firefighters. 👉 “No career is more future proof than knowing how to prevent wildfires” Me: I think you’re right. My little kiddos: “Can you show that video again where you wear the firefighter uniform and spray water around?” 🤣 I wish I would have had my shit together this much when I was in high school. Instead, I just focused on finally dunking a basketball 🤦♂️😂 But this conversation gave me so much hope and confidence in our future. I am still glowing from it. Plus my kids think she's crazy cool, saving the world...which is obviously the best I could have hoped for 🙌 Let’s go! —— PS. If you’ve already graduated High School, are mid career, and want to break into the Climate Economy. 👉 Consider applying to the Climate Drift Career Accelerator. Our last cohort had an NPS of 60 (just below Apple) and a 4.6/5 stars satisfaction rate. Plus we’re getting reviews like: 😍 1️⃣ ”I learned SO MUCH and feel 10x more equipped for my climate career goals than before.” 2️⃣ “This program has been a huge catalyst for getting unstuck in my career transition and job search.”

“Marco, do I have to write on Linkedin to find a job in Climate?” 👉 It sure helps...but here’s why you really do it: If you want to transition careers and break into a new industry. You first need to adjust the content you consume. Meaning, you: → Read books on interesting topics. → Try different newsletters. → Follow new people. You could simply stop here. BUT If you go one step further. Where you distill your learnings. And highlight + share the main ideas of concepts that matter. Several things will happen: → Your writing will improve → Networking becomes easier → You create an online presence → Your clarity of thought will skyrocket → You discover what you like and don’t like → You find your people (they often come to you) → You continuously practice explaining complex topics. So yes, you should write on LinkedIn and share your learnings. The “Continuous and deliberate practice of explaining complex topics” alone is worth it. Use this to make yourself successful 🙌 —— PS. Want to transition into a Climate Career? 👉 Consider applying to the Climate Drift Career Accelerator for mid-career professionals. Our last cohort had an NPS of 60 (just below Apple) and a 4.6/5 stars satisfaction rate. Plus we’re getting reviews like: 😍 1️⃣ “This is truly like no cohort out there! (I've done a few). The intimate community setting and amazing, intelligent speakers are unmatched.” 2️⃣ “I’ve already gotten tremendous value out of the course; specifically the action-oriented nature of the course (learning + doing, not just learning) and the orientation towards landing a career in climate and HOW to do it” 3️⃣ ”I learned SO MUCH and feel 10x more equipped for my climate career goals than before.” 4️⃣ “10 out of 10: The content is in-depth and interesting, and gives the cohort opportunities to get involved by tackling challenges hands on (which in my opinion, is the best way to learn!)

It often times feels cool to land a job at a "hot company". But I think it's even cooler to: - Work for a great Boss - Work in a great team - Learn new skills - Have time with family - Not work weekends - No evening emails Let's focus on great places to work. And not only chasing shiny logos & awards. Remember this and your career will be a lot better for it. --- PS. Some people are so humble it’s almost baffling. This happened a few days ago… I’m talking to a Climate Drift applicant. I ask them what they want to get out of the program. They tell me: ❝ I feel like an alien landing on earth trying to get a job in climate… Maybe Climate Drift could help identify if any of my professional skills are actually needed in climate.❞ Me (almost spitting out my afternoon tea): 👉 “You just told me about spending 3 years on a Navy aircraft carrier commanding a squadron of 500+ pilots. Let me list a few transferable skills that hide behind this one sentence: → Supply chain logistics…on a boat…in a foreign territory…🤯 → People management skills (at scale). → Staying calm under (real !) pressure. → Crucial + fast decision making. → Operational excellence. Do I need to go on? The person smiles and slightly flushes pink: ”Yeah, ok. Maybe there’s more than I thought”. ☺️ Sometimes my job is to simply tell people: Trust me, you have what it takes. And your talent + skills can make a huge impact on climate 💪 Let’s go! 🙌 —— PS. Somebody copy & pasted raw ChatGPT output into their Climate Drift application. I jumped on a call with them anyways…. For context, it wasn’t that I could not tell. It was dead obvious. The first two sentences where the typical ChatGPT output: “Certainly, here are the 2 reasons why you would be a great candidate for the program…” When I saw that I had to laugh out loud 😂 But what I also saw was somebody with raw talent. A lot of energy and drive. Do I care if they thought one of our application questions was stupid and used a short cut? Hell no. What I care about is their prior experience, what they have achieved and where they think their skills can bring value. And my call with them confirmed exactly that: Experience at a big consulting company. High flying and lots of prestige. Then…huge turn around: Got called back home to a different country. To help with the small family business. Started at the bottom of the ladder. Worked himself up over 4+ years. Made it to General Manager. With a team of 30 people. 👉 In short: exactly the grit we need to win the fight against climate change. So if you’re a hiring manager or recruiter in climate. Look beyond the first impression. Recognize your own bias. And see the person for who they really are. We can’t afford to miss out on solid talent because of some “old school bias” or “using AI to answer questions is cheating” thinking. Let’s go! 🙌 ——   PS. And yes, I told them that there might be some folks out there who would have used this as instant disqualification. So they should refine their approach just a tiny bit….and then we had a good laugh about it.

Want to learn and work with the best in Climate? Our current Climate Drift speakers are absolute 🔥 Here are a few of our speakers from the past weeks: (plus real feedback we received from our members after their talk 😍) 1️⃣ Gabriel Scheer from Elemental Excelerator → “At 50% of [listening] speed, he is 150% of insights from an uncommon VC-perspective” 2️⃣ Alexandra Ciobotaru from Mearsk Growth → [If you] need a compass for your own path? Listen to Alexandra. And transportation insights are the cherry on top.” 3️⃣ Hege Sæbjørnsen 🌍 from Ikea → “Exceptional communicator, was honest and vulnerable, and was a real pleasure to learn from.” 4️⃣ Johann Boedecker from Pentatonic → “Very knowledgeable. I can't get his soundbites out of my head.” 5️⃣ Daniel Hill from Environmental Defense Fund → “Very informative session and it was reassuring to hear someone who is perceived as an expert in the space humbly admit he doesn’t know [everything].” If you’re curious…. We run the Climate Drift Career accelerator for 8 weeks.  And dedicate each week to dive deep into a single climate niche. Think: → Circular economy → Transportation → Industry → Energy… Each week we have investors give us their thesis for a sector. And leaders from lighthouse climate companies share their biggest challenges. Then we work on solutions to those challenges. Showcasing our skills. Learning by doing. If you’re looking for a course simply learning about climate change and potential solutions. We’re not for you 🛑 BUT If you want to roll up your sleeves. Apply your transferable skills to a climate sector or specific company challenge. And be held to a high standard by your peers (and us). Come join us. The world needs to see your talent 💪 —— PS. Our next cohort of mid-career professionals breaking into climate is starting in September. (More info in first comment).

I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as a Senior Programmer and Analyst at Cornell University! More on this transition 👇 Earlier this year, I spent 8 weeks as part of the first Climate Drift career development cohort. I learned a ton about the diversity of work happening in climate and truly gained a new sense of motivation and optimism to continue my journey to work on climate. I’ve been looking for opportunities to get back to hands on technical work as I transition to working on climate. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work with Xiangtao Xu in the Biosphere Modeling and Monitoring lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell. I’ll be working on developing and improving software for segmenting trees from terrestrial laser scanning data, which has many interesting applications for monitoring forests. This is an exciting opportunity for me to help build real world solutions for carbon and biodiversity monitoring. I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to lean into my technical skills and see where it takes me! I want to thank Marco and Skander for building Climate Drift and their support both during and after the program, as well as my fellow “drifties”. Conversations with this passionate and talented group of professionals (shout out to Jeff Folino and Berkay Issevenler in particular for many conversations during the program) left me feeling more understood as well as motivated as a professional navigating a big career transition. We need all the talent we can get working on climate. If you’re interested and want to chat about my experience please reach out!
