The Columbia Club is a prestigious private Club in Indianapolis, Indiana that was founded in 1889. Originally called the Harrison Marching Society, the group was formed to help elect Benjamin Harrison as the 23rd President of the United States. After the election, the group decided to secure a clubhouse and increase their membership, renaming themselves the "Columbia Club" after the popular patriotic synonym for the United States. Over the years, the Columbia Club has hosted many distinguished visitors, including Presidents Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and both Bushes, as well as Charles Lindbergh and Queen Marie of Romania. In 2012, the Club was selected as a Platinum Club of America, making it one of the top 35 city Clubs in the nation. The current clubhouse, the Club's third home, is a 10-story architectural showpiece located on Monument Circle that was dedicated in 1925. Today, the Columbia Club offers its members world-class dining, networking opportunities, a health and wellness center, and a variety of special interest Clubs and events. The Columbian Magazine is proud to feature Dorothy and Bob Rynard as our Family of the Month, highlighting their long-standing contributions and cherished memories at the Club. A Lifetime of Membership: Bob became a member of the Columbia Club in August 1982. Over the years, their family has grown to include 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, many of whom have enjoyed the Club's facilities and events. Memorable Moments: Dorothy fondly recalls her favorite memory, organizing the monthly luncheon and fashion shows. These events, which ran from September to May, drew over 100 attendees and featured bridge games followed by a fashion show and delicious lunch. Favorite Events: The Rynards' most cherished Club event is the 500 Parade, a tradition enjoyed with multiple generations of their family. They also have fond memories of the tree-lighting events when their family was younger. Meaning of Membership: For Dorothy and Bob, the Club represents a rich history, a stunning venue to enjoy with friends, top-notch service, and excellent cuisine. It's a place that holds a special place in their hearts. Reasons for Joining: The decision to join the Club was influenced by Bob's involvement with lobbyists while they owned several nursing homes. The Club served as a perfect setting for discussing legislative matters and ways to enhance the lives of nursing home residents. Club Activities: Dorothy enjoys socializing and attending the Women’s Retreat, where she meets new people and has fun. Bob prefers dining at the Club with friends. They often spend time with close friends Josie and Carroll Henneke, Miles and Geralyn Schroder, and enjoy catching up with Greg Harris during events. Impact of the Club Life: The Club has enriched their lives with lasting memories and friendships, adding a layer of joy to their experiences. Dorothy and Bob's story is a testament to the vibrant community and enduring friendships that the Columbia Club fosters among its members. Join us in celebrating the Rynard family for their contributions and for bringing such warmth to our community.
