About us
The Columbia University Department of Psychiatry is one of the largest in the country in terms of faculty size as well as state, federal, and foundation research support. We have extraordinary clinical, educational, and research resources. Our faculty includes over 400 psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and neurobehavioral scientists. Clinical facilities and laboratories of the Psychiatry Department are located in, and affiliated with, a large number of institutions and health care systems. These include NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the New York State Psychiatric Institute, the New York State Office of Mental Health, the Washington Heights Community Services, and the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene. The New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI), established in 1895, was one of the first institutions in the United States to integrate teaching, research, and therapeutic approaches to the care of patients with mental illnesses. Since 1925, NYSPI has been affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and the Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Herbert Pardes, MD (1934-2024), a towering figure in psychiatry and academic medicine whose name graces our institute’s Herbert Pardes building. A former Chair of our Department and Executive Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Dr. Pardes leaves behind a profound legacy of leadership, compassion, and innovation. Dr. Pardes' influence extended far beyond the confines of academia. He was a tireless advocate for mental health parity, working to ensure that people with mental illness received the same level of care and support as those with physical ailments. His advocacy efforts played a pivotal role in shaping mental health policy at both the state and national levels, including during his tenure as President of the American Psychiatric Association.
