“The people who are writing laws in this world are not the experts. They’re constantly juggling lots of different priorities and jumping between issues. There are often new voices and new decision-makers in place, and independent community oncology practices have a lot of that wisdom and knowledge to share. When members of Congress or state leaders visit COA practices, they get to see how great our community cancer centers are for themselves.” COA’s Sit In My Chair program helps practices host state and federal policymakers to learn about issues affecting their constituents and make policy decisions with patients and practices in mind. Hear from COA’s policy and advocacy experts Nicolas Ferreyros, Rose Gerber, MS, and James Lee on the why and how behind a successful Sit In My Chair visit: https://bit.ly/4bZi99e #CancerCare #CommunityOncology

According to The Washington Post, fewer than one in five eligible people living in America were up to date with lung cancer screenings in 2022. COA’s Time to Screen campaign, a collaboration with CancerCare, highlights the importance of screening early when it is most treatable. https://bit.ly/3LhvM8W #CancerCare #WorldLungCancerDay

We were busy in the first half of 2024! Whether it was supporting bills that rein in #PBMs, fighting against regulatory hurdles, or bringing community #oncology professionals together to learn and support one another, COA has been working hard for our members. We developed a 2024 Mid-Year Update to share key details of our work from the frontlines of independent community oncology. https://lnkd.in/g44hcQeY

Today, Avalere released an analysis that examines contract pharmacies within the 340B Drug Pricing Program. Specifically, the analysis examines vertical integration and contractual affiliations with pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), mail-order, and specialty pharmacy contract pharmacy relationships in 340B. The findings exemplify how the 340B program has increasingly been taken over by for-profit PBMs. COA is committed to advocating for robust reform that ensures PBM abuses are no longer allowed to harm patients with cancer, and that the 340B program truly serves its intended purpose of helping patients in need Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gkmYYTnQ #340B #PBMs

Emily Touloukian, DO, president and CEO of Coastal Cancer Center, knows that medical fellows are key to shaping the future of independent community oncology. That’s why Dr. Touloukian demonstrates to physicians-in-training the value of practicing in the same community where they live through the COA Fellows Initiative. “Showing fellows how rewarding community oncology can be is the best way to build our workforce and protect access for the millions of patients who rely on independent clinics,” says Dr. Touloukian. “As a health care system, we need to think about what the person sitting in front of us needs. That should be the guiding force of equity and starts with getting to know your people.” – Richard Martin III, MD, MPH, of Tennessee Oncology Missed the latest COA Patient Advocacy Network chat?
