We were thrilled to be invited to the Youth in Focus Spring Student Showcase last evening. It was impressive to see students from various high schools in the county who are using their free time to explore digital and print photography techniques. Each is asked to present a self portrait and then a final image of choice. It’s a simple assignment in theory, but there was so much self discovery through the process of who they are as people, how to advocate for their vision. The photos they presented are not perfect, but that wasn’t the point. The point was to showcase “learning”. Each was able to explain their intention, what they achieved and ultimately what they learned through the process which is more difficult a task than the actual technical skills of taking the photo. What struck us most in the evening was how vulnerable the students in the room were about their process and the level of support from fellow students, teachers and families alike. They have not only developed skills and self confidence, but a real family community. Youth in Focus is a small, but important part of our Seattle community and we are so happy to be apart of it. About Youth In Focus We believe in the power of photography. But even more than that, we believe in our youth. That's why we approach photography as a means of curiosity, exploration, and self-discovery.
