Our teammates recently took caring for their community to the next level by cleaning up the Reedy River, an important natural resource and scenic destination in South Carolina. Check out David Dodd’s story about how the #volunteer troop braved some challenging weather and wildlife to get the job done! Shout-out to our team members for using their group volunteer time off (and rallying some family members for help) to collaborate with Friends of the Reedy River and the City of Greenville on this effort. 👏 #ConsorImpact #VTO #volunteering

Vice President, Diving Operations at CONSOR Engineers

On June 14th, CONSOR Engineers’ team in Greer, South Carolina, served on a group volunteer clean-up of the Reedy River, a major focal point of the community. The primary goal of this clean-up effort was a timber debris blockage and trash along the riverbank that could only be accessed from the water. The volunteer troop consisted of 22 Consor teammates, 8 Consor family members, Friends Of The Reedy River (FoRR) organization members, and equipment operators from the City of Greenville, South Carolina, South Carolina. Consor’s local team has a unique mix of skills and equipment perfectly suited for this type of work. No strangers to uncomfortable and strenuous work conditions, our construction services crew dawned chest waders, towed an aluminum boat as they scoured the river for trash, and, at one point, discovered rolls of steel banding material weighing 150 pounds each. Our divers used underwater chain saws to cut fallen trees from the debris pile and rigged them to an excavator to be lifted into a waiting dump truck. Our surface crew consisted of corporate services folks and a few older teammates. Meanwhile, our family members walked the upper riverbank collecting numerous trash bags. This was the second time Consor teamed with the City and FoRR to conduct a successful Reedy River cleanup. Such efforts are vital for the environment and serve as excellent team-building events. Our team persevered through heat, poison ivy, spiders, snakes, and much more to complete the necessary work. Overcoming these obstacles together was a beautiful reward, strengthening our bond and commitment to our community. #consorimpact #iworkforconsor #cleanup #VTO #volunteering

On average, converting stop-controlled intersections to single-lane roundabouts reduces fatal and injury crashes by 82%.* So, while they sometimes get a bad rap, roundabouts are a popular solution to move traffic effectively and keep community members safe. Spanish Fork City, Utah, selected Consor to design a new roundabout on 800 North at 300 East to increase safety, calm traffic, and streamline intersection flow. Our team delivered the design, which included comprehensive plans with roadway profiles, horizontal controls, landscaping, irrigation, signing and striping, lighting, utilities, and drainage. One of the biggest challenges? Fitting a roundabout into the footprint of the original two-way stop intersection in this quaint neighborhood. Through careful planning, our team provided a design that required minimal right-of-way acquisition (one full property and two small pieces of other properties) while also: ☑️ Accommodating trucks. ☑️ Adding bike lanes. ☑️ Protecting in-place trees. ☑️ Creating greenspace by extending neighbors’ yards. ☑️ Tying in existing driveways. We’re excited this project is currently under construction and look forward to seeing the community use this improved link through Spanish Fork! *Roundabout information from the US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (https://lnkd.in/dtjcubvk).   #consorprojects #transportationengineering #roundabout

Once the longest suspension bridge in the world, the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge spans 1,010 feet between towers and provides an iconic pedestrian link over the Ohio River in Wheeling, West Virginia. Built in 1849, it stands as the oldest bridge our structural assessment team has inspected on the National Bridge Inventory! Our team recently performed an in-depth inspection of this newly rehabilitated bridge as part of West Virginia DOT’s current six-year National Bridge Inspection Standards inspection cycle. Originally constructed for horse-and-buggies, the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 2019 after a two-ton load was implemented. So, how do you inspect a suspension bridge without placing our standard inspection equipment on the deck? 🧗 Rope access techniques, structure climbing, and confined space entry with air monitoring allowed our crew to inspect the suspension cables, main stay cables, and cable anchorages. 🚤 A bucket boat—operated by our inspectors and captained by a skilled subconsultant—was used to achieve hands-on access to most of the floor system from the Ohio River. 👷 A manlift was used at the bridge ends to inspect the stone masonry towers and backstay cables, while intricate rope-to-rope transfers were employed within the main span to access floor beams beyond the reach of the bucket boat. These methods allowed for a complete hands-on inspection of the bridge without violating the bridge’s load restriction, all while keeping the bridge open to pedestrians! Now that the bridge rehabilitation is complete, our team is also performing a load rating analysis for pedestrian loads. This engineering effort, supplemented by five more years of thorough inspections, helps maintain this 175-year-old bridge's legacy as a safe, functional pedestrian link for years to come. #structuralassessment #bridgeinspection #ropeaccess #SPRAT

Congratulations to the team for being recognized with this ACEC Florida 2024 Outstanding Special Roadway Project Award for the Glades Road Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)! 🎉 Consor was part of the construction engineering and inspection (CEI) team for this #DDI, which is part of a larger project to widen a 6-mile stretch of the I-95 corridor that connects the cities of Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Travelers now enjoy reduced traffic congestion and more #multimodal options to connect with their community, which includes new safe bike and pedestrian routes. #consorprojects #constructionservices #divergingdiamond

Congratulations to 2024 Outstanding Special Roadway recipients WSP in the U.S. (Design Consultant) and HNTB/CONSOR Engineers (CEI Consultant) for their Glades Road Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) Project (Florida Department of Transportation District 4)! The project, located within the City of Boca Raton, reconfigured the SR 808/Glades Road at SR-9/I-95 interchange from a partial cloverleaf to a DDI to improve traffic operation, reduce congestion, and increase safety. Improvements along Glades Road between Renaissance Way and West University Drive included widening two bridges over I-95 and one over Military Trail/South Florida Rail Corridor (SFRC), a new pedestrian bridge over I-95, roadway widening, drainage, lighting, signalization, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) construction. The Outstanding Project Awards annually recognize the impressive achievements of ACEC Florida members in carrying out Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) studies and projects. Nominations were submitted from projects in FDOT’s seven districts, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, and the Central Office. The awards committee is comprised of ACEC Florida and FDOT representatives. Personal connections, especially with people established in their careers, can go a long way to landing professional jobs—this can be a barrier for first-generation and/or low-income students after graduation. That’s why we partner with CareerSpring, a nonprofit that assists first-generation and/or low-income students and graduates with finding and securing internships and jobs, connecting with volunteer advisors for career guidance and networking, and accessing career resources. Here's what Engineering Designer Kimberly Cabrera has to say about her experience: “Joining the Consor team as an intern helped me realize what a roadway engineer does. This opportunity helped me develop skills and gain experience that I now use as a full-time employee, such as working and communicating with my team, developing organizational skills, multitasking, and meeting deadlines. My internship helped me meet engineers I look up to and connect with new colleagues who share similar career goals. CareerSpring opened the door to this great experience.” In the #AEC industry, where there simply aren’t enough engineers to do all the planned infrastructure work, cultivating career opportunities for first-generation and low-income students is crucial for our future. Bringing together people with different backgrounds and skills also helps us provide infrastructure solutions that meet our communities’ diverse needs.
