Meet Mara Fischer! We sat down with Mara to ask her why she’s so fascinated with the ocean, what she’s working on, and what she most enjoys about fieldwork! Q: Why are you so fascinated by the ocean? A: I was lucky to spend many summers at the Baltic Sea and to learn to scuba dive at a young age which undoubtedly contributed to my fascination for the ocean. As part of my undergraduate degree in Ecological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, I got to spend one year studying in Sydney at the University of New South Wales. It was here that I discovered my interest in marine ecology and conservation and decided to pursue this further through a Master’s degree in Marine Environmental Management at the University of Exeter. Q: What are you working on? A: I am part of the team that looks at the role of marine life and biodiversity in sediment carbon storage. As part of that, we are investigating how protection from human disturbances such as bottom trawling can promote healthy seafloor communities and whether that in turn leads to higher sediment carbon storage. Q: What do you enjoy about fieldwork? A: I have been part of extensive fieldwork campaigns with the Convex Seascape Survey, and I love to chat about field methods such as grab sampling, Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUVS), and Remotely Operated Vehicles ( ROV). #Ocean #MarineScience #ConvexSeascapeSurvey ExeterMarine Convex Insurance Blue Marine Foundation

We're excited to share an open-source method for accurately georectifying drone image data for studying surface water processes. This method allows aerial images captured by drones in the absence of fixed reference points to be located on the earth's surface and spatially corrected. Tested on land and water, it proved reliable and will be further utilised in the Convex Seascape Survey. This innovation will significantly enhance our ability to monitor marine environments and assess the impacts of fishing activities. Jenny Watts, who authored the paper, said, ‘this technique is significant because it makes it possible to use affordable drones for advanced marine studies.’ As part of our research, we want to put these methods to the test by conducting fieldwork from vessels during trawling events to identify optical differences at the sea surface caused by the disturbance of the seafloor and relate these to observations made within the water column.
