Each of them succumbed to appendix cancer, one of the rarest forms of cancer around the world. Appendiceal cancer is estimated to affect only around 1 to 2 people per million per year, but early detection, surgery, and chemotherapy, are increasing disease-free survival for these patients. Is cancer prevention on your summer/back-to-school checklist? ✅ August is the time to think about vaccines and making sure you and your loved ones have limited your risk to cancers that can be caused by viruses like human papilloma virus (HPV) and Hepatitis B (HepB). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that children have their first vaccine dose for HepB at birth, followed by doses through 15 months, and their first vaccination for HPV between the ages of 11 and 12. Adults should be vaccinated for HepB as young as 19, and as late as age 60 or older, depending on risk factors. Adults may also want to consider vaccination for Hepatitis A (HepA). During National Immunization Month, talk with your healthcare provider now about getting or staying current with your vaccines and making cancer prevention a priority. It took almost 30 years for the U.S. government to have a formal role in cancer research with the directive to act as the principal agency to conduct research and training on the cause, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
