Full grain and top grain leather explained! Follow along as we go #BeyondTheGrain this summer and dive into the complex world of upholstery leather to help make choosing the right pattern easier.    Both full and top grain leathers are made from the outside, most durable layer of hides and are equally durable.   Full grain leather (sometimes called “uncorrected grain”):   • Full grain leather is not buffed or sanded and is designed to purposely showcase the natural feel and markings of each hide, such as variable grain, wrinkles, and scratches.  •  Generally, full grain leather is made from top-grade hides with fewer markings which is why it can be more expensive. But not always! •  Each hide is unique. Some leather lovers consider furniture covered in full grain leather the peak of luxury and authenticity, especially when artfully showcasing the unique and natural markings.    Top-grain leather (sometimes called “corrected grain”): •  The topmost layers of the hides are buffed or sanded for several reasons:      (1) to create a base surface primed for a wider variety of unique leather designs such as waxy distressed, oil pull-ups, exotic embossing, etc.     (2) to reduce the appearance of natural grains and markings     (3) to improve finish adhesion •  A highly natural looking grain can be embossed onto the hide which increases yield. (Upcoming topic: Leather Grains Explained)  •   Top-grain crust starts out like a blank canvas perfect for custom orders. Your fit-for-purpose mission can be achieved: color, sheen, price point, lead time, grain style (natural, exotic, decorative), leather type, performance level, U.S. made, etc.    Fun Fact: Some full grains are “mezzo fiore” (Italian for “half flower”) which means the top surface is buffed very slightly to allow for better adhesion of finishes, but a majority of the natural markings purposely remain. Hey there, interior designers! We’re going Beyond the Grain this summer and diving into the complex world of upholstery leather to give you easy-to-absorb tips of the trade each week or so. Follow along here and on Insta and save! First up… Nubuck vs. suede! They may look similar, but they have distinct characteristics. Nubuck is created by sanding the outermost surface of the highest-quality full-grain leather, resulting in a luxurious, brushed nap that adds a soft organic look to a space. Nubucks are typically pure anilines treated only with aniline dyes and a water repellent to aid in stain resistance, although sometimes a light wax or oil can be added, as well as a grain texture to create additional variety and interest. All nubucks carry the strength and durability of a full-grain leather, making them more resistance to puncture or tearing. And all nubucks highlight and celebrate the natural markings inherent in full-grain anilines and are loved by true leather aficionados. Suede is made by sanding the inner layer or “split” of the hide, producing a uniform soft and fuzzy look and feel, without any of the natural markings inherent in the top layer of the hide. Suedes are dyed twice for color consistency and vibrancy. We typically don't recommend suede for seat cushions in high-traffic spaces, but the matte, fuzzy finish is perfect for pairing with other leathers or fabrics for dimension and luxury. While both will add a similar brushed texture and soft sophistication to any design, suedes are sold in clean, 20 sq.ft. fully usable panels whereas Nubucks are sold in full, irregularly shaped hides averaging 55 sq.ft.
