August is National Multiethnic Donor Awareness Month. Many COTA families are waiting for their children and young adults to be matched to an organ or tissue donor – like COTA Kid Ruby Mwamba was. Ruby received a life-saving liver transplant at Seattle Children's in April 2022. COTA Teen Gavin’s transplant journey – and COTA partnership – started in 2006. He has received two life-saving liver transplants since then, in 2015 and 2022. Gavin is a living testament to COTA’s lifetime commitment to our transplant families. The goal of the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is to meet the financial obligations that each patient faces. Most patients have health insurance coverage, but this does not cover fuel costs to numerous clinic visits, expenses incurred when parents or spouses are on unpaid leave from work as caregivers, and multiple (and expensive) monthly prescription co-payments and deductibles. The average lung transplant and follow-up care requires more than $1.4 million. COTA works with patients of any age facing life-saving transplants as a result of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) to raise funds for transplant-related expenses.
