Designed to captivate and inspire, this 100% cotton knit has randomized knit stripes in pique and jersey knit construction. The combination of these structures, along with garment processing, creates a knit seersucker look. A vintage color effect was created by removing color from the surface during garment processing. After increasing its forecast for acreage in late June, the USDA lifted its estimates for US production and ending stocks this month. Simultaneously, crop condition ratings have been falling. Hot and dry weather in West Texas may still affect yield and the number of US harvested acres. Any additional fiber coming out of the US will contribute to the large volume of global exportable supply expected in the new crop year, which may have to compete for import demand. The global apparel industry is responsible for 8.3 million metric tons of #plastic leakage each year. That’s the equivalent weight of 820 Eiffel Towers, more than 23 times the weight of the Empire State Building, and almost 9 times the weight of the Golden Gate Bridge. This month marks Plastic Free July, and for the apparel industry it’s a good time to take a look at its usage of the synthetic fabrics that cause microplastic pollution. The tiny microparticles from petroleum-based textiles like polyester, nylon, and acrylic shed from clothes both when worn and laundered, ending up in our air, soil, water -- and our food chain – where they can take hundreds of years to biodegrade. But apparel brands and retailers can stem the tide of microplastic pollution by switching to natural fibers like cotton, which is a renewable resource and can biodegrade quickly. Did you know that synthetic apparel causes more than 10 times more plastic leakage than cotton garments across the garment life cycle? The predicted increases in synthetic fiber production and usage will drastically worsen plastic pollution. As a significant source of plastic leakage into our oceans, waterways, and soil, the apparel industry has a critical role to play in reducing plastic leakage. Ultimately, the apparel industry needs to ramp up its efforts towards true circularity and prioritize the use of natural fibers like #cotton to transition to natural and renewable materials and limit plastic pollution.
