About us

The Covenant of Mayors for the Mediterranean, CoM Med, is an initiative funded by the European Union (EU) that brings together and supports Mediterranean local governments in their fight against climate change. It is a voluntary based initiative that allows cities to define and meet ambitious and realistic targets set by themselves in line with the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) requirements and their National Determined Contributions (NDCs). CoM Med is a regional alliance of cities and local governments from the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, as well as Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Araba Emirates and Yemen. Increasingly, committed mayors and local governments across the Mediterranean are heeding the call to act with nations working towards the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Together with CoM Med partners, they share a long-term vision of supporting voluntary and ambitious actions to combat climate change towards an inclusive, resilient and low-emission society. Background: CoM Med initiative was set up in the Mediterranean region since 2012 when the European Commission extended the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) to cover partner countries from the South Neighbourhood. The EU-funded CES-MED project was then launched to support cities from the Region in joining the CoM and committing to ambitious sustainable development policies. Building upon the success of the initiative, CoM Med is established and developed by another EU-funded project - Clima-Med that supports local authorities in their quest to prepare and implement coherent Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans (SEACAPs) in line with CoM requirements. While incorporating local climate actions and facilitating to this end collaboration among a wide range of regional, national, funding and non-state actors, it also supports partnerships and win-win cooperation between cities.
