🌍 Celebrating Sustainable Progress in Baalbek! 🌍 The Baalbek Union of Municipalities is making a bold move in the fight against climate change! Faced with significant environmental challenges, the Union is launching a comprehensive plan to reduce emissions, improve the climate, and promote sustainable energy. 🎉 This initiative is part of the EU-funded Clima-Med project: Acting for Climate in the Southern Mediterranean, which supports regions like Baalbek in combating the adverse effects of climate change. 👏 A big shoutout to key municipalities like Iaat, Maqneh, Haouch Tall Safiyeh, Majdaloun, and Duris for already being on board—they’re just getting started! 🌱 Proud to have also joined the Covenant of Mayors for the Mediterranean (CoM Med), the Union is working towards a healthier, greener future for the community, taking a major step towards global climate action. 🌍✨ 🌱 Special thanks to the Mayors and the technical committee for spearheading the development of a climate and environmental plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance clean energy initiatives. 📢 Cities Alliance has launched a comprehensive strategy to tackle climate change in MENA cities with a focus on inclusivity and resilience. 👫 With 73% of MENA’s population (305 million) living in cities, it is crucial to ensure that urban spaces are ready for future heatwave, floods, and that the citizens' needs are taken into account. 💧 The MENA region holds only 1% of the world’s freshwater but covers 9.5% of the world’s land area. Key actions include: 🌱 Sustainable Infrastructure: Developing green and inclusive urban infrastructure such as parks, green roofs, and urban agriculture (for enhanced food security) 🏘️ Inclusive Planning: Engaging all residents, including women and marginalized communities, in climate adaptation efforts to address climate-resilient and gender-sensitive infrastructure. 💡 Renewable Energy: Integrating renewable energy sources in urban infrastructure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 👩👧👦 Support for Vulnerable Groups and Refugees: Implementing projects that target vulnerable populations, enhancing their resilience and livelihood options. 📊 Community Engagement: Empowering local communities, particularly women, in renewable energy projects and sustainable waste management. 🏛️ Regional Collaboration: Strengthening partnerships with local and national governments, NGOs, and grassroots organizations. 💼 Capacity Building: Training local authorities and community groups on climate adaptation and disaster risk management. 🌍Exciting News! Welcoming new Lebanese 🇱🇧 signatory Cities to #CoMMed On 1️⃣3️⃣ of March, #Clima-Med hosted an online workshop, bringing together new members from approximately 1️⃣1️⃣ municipalities to #EU-funded #CoMMed, 8️⃣ of which are represented by the Union of Baalbek municipalities. This initiative marks a continuous step towards collective #climate actions in the Mediterranean region. 🎙️During the workshop, newly adhered Lebanese cities delved into the essential initial steps required to kickstart the preparation of their #SEACAP (Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plans). 👩💻🧑💻Cities leaders are eager and prepared to use these plans as valuable tools to guide them towards #sustainabledevelopment and implement strong strategies to adapt to climate change. 👏🏻A special mention to #Menjez municipality, which will be updating its previous SEAP from 2016 into a new SEACAP. Three intense and enriching days brought together the Global Covenant of Mayors family from across the world at the GCoM Open House 2024! 🎉 Throughout the three days, Regional/National Covenants had the opportunity to share results, solutions, and insights. Each region, from GCoM Americas to GCoM Oceania, showcased their unique results and developments. We also enjoyed meaningful discussions, knowledge-sharing, and valuable insights on GCoM's global initiatives – including City Climate Finance Gap Fund, Bankable Cities, Business Matchmaking, Urban Transitions Mission, and #Innovate4Cities. Just as importantly, plenty of networking opportunities fostered new enduring connections. 🙏 Thank you to all our Regional/National Covenants, Secretariat team members and Alliance partners for everything that you do, and all you continue to achieve!
