Providing shelter and comprehensive services to young people experiencing homelessness in New York City.
About us
Each year in the United States, as many as 2 million youth experience homelessness of some kind, and every year more than 5,000 of these young people lose their lives to the streets. For over 45 years, Covenant House New York (CHNY) has been a leader in providing residential services to vulnerable homeless, runaway and exploited youth. As the largest provider of runaway and homeless youth services in New York City, CHNY serves nearly 1,800 young adults aged 16-24 annually with an operating budget of over 24 million dollars. Our doors are open to all young people who need help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. We facilitate our services using trauma-informed principles and provide a holistic approach to young people who are attempting to leave the streets and achieve independence. We also advocate for systemic change by influencing public policy and promoting awareness of critical issues related to young people experiencing homelessness. Covenant House New York’s mission is to help each young person find safety and refuge from the dangers of living on the streets. We do this through compassion, unconditional love and absolute respect.

We recently got to celebrate 32 CHNY youth who graduated from high school or GED programs. "I want you to promise me today that you are not going to give up. I want you to promise me today that you are going to keep moving forward, keep striving, and keep on your journey towards thriving." - Dr. Shakeema North, CHNY CEO. The ceremony had senior staff enter in the processional, and a welcome by SVP of Support Services, Lyndell Pittman. The keynote speaker was Rah Thomas Managing Director at Accenture. Rah is on the Covenant House International Board of Directors and has been dedicated to our work for several years. The class address was given by Gisele Morgan the Principal of Pathways to Graduation (P2G). Gisele continuously supports our CovWorks program in whatever way we need. We are so proud of these CHNY youth!

Today's decision by the Supreme Court in the Johnson v. Grants Pass case sets a dangerous precedent for the quarter of a million people who sleep outside each night in America and for the millions of families who are just one missed paycheck away from homelessness. This ruling makes it easier to jail or ticket homeless people and youth for sleeping outside, which will make homelessness worse. Covenant House stands unwavering in our commitment to be there for any youth who comes to our doors. Help end youth homelessness and create opportunities for self-reliance when you make your gift today: https://lnkd.in/eJ5MB93m.

We hosted a Pride Panel discussion on authenticity in the workplace for our young people last week. The perspectives shared during the panel offered a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced in the workplace, while also bringing to light the positivity of work being done to create more inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community. We are grateful to our panelists, Michael Kline, Kyle Williams, and Ken Wright for sharing their invaluable insights and experiences. And a huge thank you to Faty Kane for translating for our French speaking youth.

With Covenant House board member Ariana DeBose hosting the Tonys tonight, we thought it'd be the perfect time to tell you about this summer's Sleep Out: Stage & Screen! Our supporters from the Broadway, film, and television industries will give up their beds on August 18th, sleeping outside to raise funds and awareness. Their uncomfortable night turns into safe shelter for youth facing homelessness. If you want to support your favorite actor's campaign, or if you're an industry professional and want to participate, you can get involved at https://lnkd.in/eb-9V_vp
