CPJ calls on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to: - Immediately grant independent access to news organizations seeking to access Gaza. - Release journalists arbitrarily held without charge. - Launch credible, transparent, and thorough investigations that meet international standards into the killings of journalists. - Revoke the law that allows the temporary banning of any foreign media outlet in Israel. No credible democracy engages in what is, in effect, a growing censorship regime. This must stop. #PressFreedom

President Joe Biden should press the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to protect journalists. With unprecedented numbers of journalists killed amidst a shocking civilian death toll, the #UnitedStates must ensure that #Israel: 🔴Ceases the killing of journalists, 🔴Allows immediate and independent media access to the occupied Gaza Strip, and 🔴Takes urgent steps to enable the press to report freely throughout Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. https://lnkd.in/e9DpuJ-a

The Global Network Initiative (GNI), of which CPJ is a member, is deeply concerned about the latest draft of the United Nations Cybercrime Convention (United Nations Comprehensive International Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) for Criminal Purposes). As Member States prepare to finalize the Convention in August, GNI urges them to carefully consider the draft’s likely impact on privacy, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association, gender equality and other internationally recognized human rights. And CPJ documented 99 journalists and media workers killed worldwide in 2023 — nearly three quarters of whom were Palestinian journalists who died in the Israel-Gaza war. This 2023 global total is the highest since 2015 and an almost 44% increase from 2022. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eeyTzv4Y

In CPJ’s 2023 annual prison census, Turkey was the world’s 10th worst jailer of journalists—its most press-friendly ranking in almost a decade—with 13 behind bars, down from 40 the previous year. But the latest numbers don’t tell the full story. Read our new feature about why Turkey—a NATO member with close ties to the West—is frequently ranked alongside authoritarian states like Iran and Egypt in CPJ’s prison census: https://lnkd.in/eFepzuiU

“Russia’s decision to jail Evan Gershkovich for 16 years on sham charges is outrageous,” said CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna. “Journalists are not pawns in geopolitical games. It’s time to stop hostage diplomacy and free him immediately.” #IStandWithEvan https://lnkd.in/eb-36Jrm
