During any conflict, journalists are civilians under international humanitarian law. Facilities and equipment utilized for reporting and disseminating news are also civilian structures. They must be respected and protected. Journalists are #NotATarget.

"Evan and Alsu were detained and sentenced on spurious charges intended to punish them for their journalism and stifle independent reporting. Their release is welcome – but it does not change the fact that Russia continues to suppress a free press. Moscow needs to release all jailed journalists and end its harassment of exiled Russian journalists," said CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg. #JournalismIsNotACrime

This week, CPJ welcomed the release of five journalists unjustly imprisoned for their work. Three in Morocco—Taoufik Bouachrine, Soulimane Raissouni, and Omar Radi—and two from Russia—Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva. CPJ will continue to push for the release of all journalists who have been jailed in retaliation for their reporting. Journalism is not a crime.

“Evan and Alsu have been apart from their families for far too long,” said CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg. “They were detained and sentenced on spurious charges intended to punish them for their journalism and stifle independent reporting. Their reported release is welcome – but it does not change the fact that Russia continues to suppress a free press. Moscow needs to release all jailed journalists and end its campaign of using in absentia arrest warrants and sentences against exiled Russian journalists.” Russian authorities have targeted more than a dozen exiled journalists since June as part of their escalating campaign of transnational repression of independent voices. Authorities sought the arrest of one exiled journalist and added two to their wanted list of suspects sought on criminal charges. In addition, five were prosecuted for working with “undesirable organizations,” which are banned from operating in Russia. Attacks on journalists’ lives and liberty remained at near record-levels in 2023. CPJ documented: ➡️ 99 journalists killed worldwide in 2023, the highest total since 2015. ➡️ 320 journalists imprisoned for their work as of the December 1 date of its annual prison census — near the global all-time high of more than 360 a year earlier. Israel became the source for over 75% of journalist killings, and rose to the sixth-worst jailer of journalists after the start of the Israel-Gaza war on October 7.
