The most challenging aspect with running a business is that managing all of the business pieces constantly threatens to distract from the real reason we should work: using our skills to help people thrive. The way I combat this? Talking with people, hearing how housing impacts them (good or bad), and reading books. If I can keep the big picture in the right place, the rest falls into place. Infrastructure design has lost its way, we need to get back to remembering who the user is how to design to help our communities thrive. We can do better. How a design is being used (or not) is a great metric to understand if a design is actually meeting the needs of the user. Craft Civil Design is excited to announce a new stormwater management concept: the "AquaPup Collector Harness". Recent studies have shown this concept reduces the site detention footprint by almost 88%, while also removing the need for a dog run.   This concept was recently presented to local stormwater reviewer, Dan Auerbach, who is encouraged by this innovation: "We've been discussing the concept of Sponge Cities for years, but this perspective will solve many of the issues we've encountered, while also providing exercise for our pets. Consultants are knowledge workers. To ensure Craft Civil is an incubator for highly competent consultants, we have a layered training and QC program involving individual mentoring as well as group discussions. This week we discussed how to create grading plans that communicate the design intent clearly. We see our construction documents as a visual argument explaining clearly how we meet the needs of the community, contractor and developer. We've got a website - check it out! We've been intentionally slow to get this off the ground, focusing instead on building our team and existing relationships. We're hesitant to embrace "marketing" - we'd like to grow through a solid reputation for quality services built on relationships. That said - we do want to get the word out regarding our approach, our team, and what we value so we can team up with like minded developers who want to build amazing projects. Just getting into this book, curious to learn how Tokyo has emerged the way it has, being both full of eclectic character AND affordable housing. In urban planning ( and company planning!), the tension between regulation/standards and letting each group meet objectives in their own unique way is fascinating. I think there is some work to do with drainage laws, and the varying interpretation of these requirements in each jurisdiction (freeboard, how to calc imperviousness, how detention zones add up, etc). Drainage has a huge impact on usable area for housing, and will increasingly conflict with housing goals. It may be worth asking how we can update drainage regulations/incentives/programs to harmonize with housing goals while also providing effective drainage practices across different jurisdictions.
