🌟 Credo AI is delighted to have been part of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Summit in Louisville, KY this year. Evi Fuelle presented “AI 101: Opportunities and Challenges” with Colorado Senator Robert Rodriguez to a packed room on day one of the conference – signaling a strong and continued interest in #AI and need for AI Literacy. Our learnings: 1. State Legislators want to take an iterative approach to policy development that allows AI governance to keep up with rapid technological change. 2. There is a strong desire at the state level to get AI governance right, to learn from cybersecurity and data governance best practices, and not repeat the harms that happened related to children’s online safety in terms of being unaware of or unprepared for risks associated with new technologies. 3. Legislators recognize the importance of fostering trust and bringing diverse stakeholders together through inclusive task forces and working groups on AI to create foundational AI policies that include elements like disclosure, accountability, reporting, and assessments, which can be built upon iteratively through citizen and industry feedback. 4. Colorado is not the only state to take action on AI. In 2024, six laws or executive orders specific to AI governance in the public or private sector were passed in: Colorado, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Utah and Virginia, with legislative proposals also introduced in states like Illinois and Alabama. 🗓 Today, 1 August, the EU AI Act enters into force, with key obligations applying from 2 February 2025, 2 August 2025, 2026, and 2027. The European Commission’s newly created EU AI Office is currently working on codes of practice for #GPAI models, and guidelines to further clarify different parts of the EU AI Act, and will oversee implementation and enforcement of the AI Act, in coordination with the EU Member States. 🚫 The consequences for noncompliance range from penalties of €35 million (or 7 percent of global revenue) to €7.5 million (or 1 percent of revenue), depending on the infringement and size of the company. Over the next several months, enterprises should take action to start to meet their compliance obligations, including identifying and classifying their AI systems (including use and development) and putting in place an enterprise-wide, comprehensive AI governance framework.
