This summer has allowed me to focus on my passion projects - though perhaps "non-academic", the process of creating things like videos and music (on the way..) has broadened my mind beyond academic contexts. I captured my trip to Kerala and the life lessons that it taught me on my YouTube channel! Check out 'this girl in Kerala" :)

Many programmers believe that you need to be fully knowledgeable of every single framework, language, and API before you can build something from scratch. However, as an aspiring data scientist, I can attest that this is not true. The first step is to have an idea and think through the potential implementation in a general sense. For instance, just this past weekend, I was playing a friendly game of Texas Hold'em with my collaborator, Justrene Hartono, and went all-in with the "best hand" in poker, pocket aces. Despite my belief and the high equity that my hand was supposed to have against any other two-card pairing, I did not win. At that moment, amidst our hysterical laughter at losing such an improbable matchup, I wanted to know the percentage of times I should have theoretically won against his hand. To solve this dilemma, we spent the next three hours discussing how to create a script to do the heavy lifting for us. We first discussed the purpose of the mini-project, then the tech stack and language we were going to use (we settled on a full Python script with no frontend). Using the numpy library and Overleaf LaTeX to report our findings, we completed a mini hackathon project in our hotel room at 3 a.m. Of course, there were obstacles, the main one being the actual algorithm to calculate the equity of a hand. Although we understood the underlying mathematics, we realized that developing an accurate algorithm in-house overnight wasn't feasible. Understanding this, we pivoted our project and took inspiration from similar prior projects available online, making predictions that were less precise but sufficient for the conclusion and purposes of our study. This experience showed me that you don't need to master every tool before starting a project. Instead, having a clear idea and a willingness to explore and learn as you go can lead to successful outcomes. You will never know what you can achieve if you never start or try. If anyone is interested in seeing our project, I have linked the open-source repository on my LinkedIn profile.

I had the incredible opportunity to participate in cseed's buildspace cohort 1. Over six weeks, I collaborated with mentors and worked on an idea I've been eager to implement for months! The project is still in progress, and I'm seeking collaborators with startup deployment experience and skills in React, MongoDB, and/or Firebase. If you're interested or can offer mentorship, please DM me! I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hawa Drammeh for being an amazing mentor and supporter, offering invaluable advice, and to Marina Wooden for her exceptional expertise in React 😊 This summer, I’m thrilled to have been accepted into buildspace's S5 nights and weekends program! I’ll continue developing my project and look forward to engaging with an incredible community.

🚀 Announcing TopicOverflow v0! 🚀 TopicOverflow is designed to simplify studying by scanning past papers, helping students tackle challenging topics effectively, rather than wasting time searching for relevant problem sets. In this initial version, we've set up a basic ML model for question classification and answer matching, along with a robust backend infrastructure. A live demo is attached below. For v1, we’re focusing on: More efficient ML Models: Enhancing our question and answer matching algorithms for better speed and greater accuracy. Intuitive Front-End: Building a sleek, user-friendly interface and search functionality. Hopefully, this will be the first usable version of our product, and I look forward to working with Aarav Wadhwani to transform this dorm room idea into reality.
