Post graduation and entering the workforce hindered me more and more from tending to my creative thoughts, ideas, and sketching. Our goal is not to advance a predetermined vision of Great Lakes cities as climate havens, but to explore the ambiguities and uncertainties inherent in a changing climate. We recognize there will be no true winners or losers when it comes to climate change, but rather a series of complex interrelationships and competing needs. //We are seeking submissions that address one or more of these themes: // EQUITY Privileged versus forced migration, the risks of climate gentrification, the needs of existing and historically underserved communities, Indigenous land and water rights. // DESIGN NARRATIVES Drawings, diagrams, and stories that explore future scenarios and speculate about the possibilities of climate migration in tangible and detailed ways. // STRATEGIES & INDICATORS How can communities plan for the possibilities of climate migration? How will we know if climate migration is underway and to what extent? Join us on Wednesday, October 18 for Doctor Sharon Wohl’s lecture on Meanderings: Advocacy, Complexity, and Opportunities in the Urban Sphere! The lecture will be held in person at the CUDC, 1309 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44115, and online via Zoom Livestream using the link on our website. There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m., and the lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. In her lecture, Dr. Wohl will be focusing on her research and advocacy work. Through this, strategic ways in which design advocacy work can elevate the role of designers will be explored, as well as new potentials for integrating technologies into the built environment - with an emphasis on how technologically enabled built interfaces (Internet of Things) can create more adaptive, responsive living environments. Dr. Sharon Wohl holds a Master's in Architecture and a Ph.D. in Spatial Planning and Strategy from Delft Technical University in the Netherlands. Her research examines how principles of complex adaptive systems can be operationalized within the built environment, focusing on urban systems.  Her expertise in complexity has been recognized in various ways:  through a research fellowship with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Amsterdam, a group dedicated to cross-disciplinary investigations into complex systems, and invitations for a range of speaking/guest lecture events. Today at 5PM! This workshop is designed to examine potential barriers with hiring and keeping a diverse workforce in architecture and design firms. This class will be taught by Dawn Mayes, Director of Design Entrepreneurship and Inclusion at Kent State’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC). The workshop is a collaboration between the CUDC and the Cleveland AIA. It’s an in-person only event, but it will be recorded and posted to the CUDC’s website if you can’t make it on September 27.
