From The Bronx to Brooklyn, we're working with community-based organizations to infuse restorative justice into schools, court-based programs, substance use support, training programs & more. In The Bronx Times, Emily Swanson wrote about what our Bronx partners are doing, including the work Aisha Norris is leading at DREAM BX: "Starting this fall, her staff of teaching artists and restorative justice practitioners will work at the five-school Evander Childs campus within District 11. They will be embedded in the schools multiple days per week, working with staff and students to provide 'comprehensive services, not just one-offs.'" ISLG is a good governance think and do tank crafting research, policy and practices that help governments work for all.
About us
The CUNY Institute for State and Local Governance was created in 2013 to assist current and future leaders in government and non-government organizations, nationally and internationally, to improve the structure, financing, delivery, measurement, and evaluation of critical public services. We work closely with state and local governments, public benefit organizations, nonprofit organizations, public charities, and the private sector to bridge the gap among researchers and practitioners to achieve greater efficiency and impact in the delivery of critical government services. We provide research that is scientifically rigorous, yet accessible to broader audiences, practical in its implementation, and sensitive to timelines and the political realities within which governments and non-government organizations operate. Our technical assistance helps government and non-government organizations implement data-driven and results-oriented practices and improve performance. We also provide executive development for current and future leaders to build successful careers and to improve the management capabilities and the effectiveness of the organizations they support.

[DATA UPDATE] Last year, we analyzed whether people released from jail after pretrial reforms in @safety_justice cities & counties were rearrested for violent crime. Overwhelmingly, they weren't. This year, we dug deeper. These findings hold true. https://bit.ly/3zDI0WI

Probation and parole have become a leading cause of incarceration. Almost 1 in 4 prison admissions is due to a technical violation of parole of the adults. But little has been known about what causes these revocations. In an effort to understand the drivers behind this, we launched the Reducing Revocations Challenge (RRC) in 2019. The RRC fills the void of information on what causes unsuccessful probation outcomes through in-depth, mixed-method research, which was conducted in 10 counties during Phase I. In Phase II, the findings were put into action with innovative strategies to improve outcomes and equity in four of those sites. From utilizing data-driven approaches that bolster sustainability to creating intentional opportunities for community input at various stages of the reform strategy and implementation process, these sites are already seeing positive change. Today was our Public Policy Pathways Interns' last day at CUNY ISLG. To mark their send-off, they presented the work they've done over the past few weeks, which ranged from liaising with public officials to developing fundraising strategies to creating new ways to sort data. Congrats to our 2024 interns! We know they're going to do great things. Attorney, consultant, and practitioner working at the intersection of restorative approaches and system change. David Prize Winner.
Opportunity! I'm thrilled to be part of the incoming cohort of grantees of this investment in restorative justice in NYC. As part of this work, my team will be providing TA to community-based organizations in NYC that have already begun investing and planning for RJ approaches but need help launching the work. This is for small organizations and there's currently one slot available starting in Oct 2024. Do you know an organization that might be a good fit? Please share this application: https://lnkd.in/eZ8WM9Mr ...or get in touch at: erikasasson.com
"We become human again. It's not just the crime or the victim." In partnership with NYC Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, we're excited to announce the launch of the Community-Based Restorative Justice Program. With an initial investment of $6.5M, we'll be working with 16 community-based organizations to support existing programs, create new fellowships, and design training to promote restorative justice across the boroughs. Restorative justice is an important tool in the criminal legal toolbox. The process invites everyone impacted by conflict to develop a shared understanding of both the root causes and the effects on those who have been harmed while also encouraging those who have caused harm to take responsibility. Action research is a form of inquiry that emphasizes collaboration between researchers and practitioners to solve real-world problems. It is collaborative, iterative, solution-focused, and timely. It elevates the importance of community voice and agency in practices, public discourse, and policymaking in ways that can transform the criminal legal system. The goal of the Reducing Revocations Challenge is to help counties better understand the gaps in their probation practices through researcher-practitioner partnerships. We intentionally chose the Action Research model to maximize the relevance and applicability of research to conditions on the ground, and ensure practical solutions that could drive real change. On our blog, Daphne Moraga and Victoria Lawson explain how we did it, and highlight some of the ways these counties are applying their work. Read more: https://bit.ly/4fheCWN

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, an effort shine light on the unique challenges folks from marginalized communities face in accessing mental healthcare. But it's not just those seeking care who face challenges - those who want to provide care do, too. The same barriers that people from under-resourced backgrounds face in accessing care affect the pathways into these careers. This means that staff in the "helping professions" - nurses, social workers, therapists, psychiatrists, and leaders in these fields - often don't reflect the communities they serve. For someone seeking care, this can impact trust, mutual understanding, and, potentially, diagnoses and treatment. We spoke to over a hundred staff in these fields to find out why - from elementary school to professional careers - these gaps exist. Our findings lead to actionable steps that policymakers, nonprofit leaders, and others can take to fix it. Read more: https://bit.ly/4batmnu

Exciting news for those invested in #criminaljusticereform! A new study reinforces a key principle: safely reducing jail populations does not translate to higher crime rates. This is significant. It provides strong evidence that building safer communities and achieving a more just system are not mutually exclusive goals. We can prioritize public safety while also addressing the issue of unnecessary incarceration. This research adds valuable data to the ongoing conversation. Thank you to the team at The Safety and Justice Challenge & the CUNY Institute for State & Local Governance! Let's keep working together to move the needle towards a more effective and equitable justice system. Visit: https://lnkd.in/e-FQ3Bdb #publicsafety #datadrivenjustice
