The Liter of Light Project This project was launched to tackle the rising cost of electricity in the Philippines, aiming to illuminate 1 million homes. This innovative approach uses plastic bottles to provide indoor lighting from daylight, an idea originally developed by Brazilian mechanic Alfredo Moser. In 2011, the Liter of Light movement began, inspired by Moser’s simple yet effective invention. By mixing bleach with water in an empty bottle and placing it in a hole in the roof, Moser discovered he could illuminate his house during the day, creating the equivalent of a 40-60 Watt lightbulb. Filipino organization MyShelter adopted this concept and transformed it into a global movement, teaching communities how to install these lights. This solution is invaluable for areas lacking reliable electricity, lighting homes at no cost during daylight hours across the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Argentina, and Fiji. Recognizing the need for night-time illumination, Litro de Luz developed a system to store solar energy. This system includes a solar panel, a battery, LED lamps inside a PET bottle, and a control circuit that activates the light as it gets dark. The Liter of Light project not only provides sustainable lighting but also empowers communities by teaching them to harness and utilize renewable energy. Together, we can bring light to the world, one bottle at a time. 💡🌍 #LiterofLight #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #CommunityEmpowerment #Innovation #SolarEnergy #GlobalImpact
Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub

Fostering a greater understanding of digital trade and data governance issues.
About us
The Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub is a non-profit research institute affiliated with the George Washington University's (GWU) Elliot School of International Affairs. Our founding director, Susan Ariel Aaronson, is a distinguished Research Professor at GWU's Institute for International Economic Policy and a Senior Fellow at the Center for International Governance Innovation in Canada. She has published extensively on subjects related to International trade, the WTO, digital trade, digital rights, data governance, good governance, anti-corruption, transparency, economic growth, and human rights. The Hub was established to address the ramifications of increasingly complex digital trade and data governance policies that were and are being created by exponential digital development. Currently, researchers, firms, and governments are using insights gleaned from analyses of large data sets, collected from internet users, to create new goods and services (a data-driven economy). To address growing concerns around privacy, cybersecurity, and the freedom of speech, societies are developing new rules to govern the use of that data. Given different national norms regarding data and the rapid pace of data-driven technological development, it will not be easy to find common ground on domestically and internationally accepted policies. Our mission is to provide policymakers, the press, and the public with a greater understanding of these complex digital trade and data governance issues in order to improve trust and efficiency in our systems. To fulfill our mission, the Hub conducts original research on mapping data governance policies and hosts a network of digital scholars. In addition, we have worked with the WTO, Senate AI Caucus, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Centre for International Governance Innovation, US International Trade Commission, Web Foundation, and many more to organize free webinars and trainings for policy makers and the public.

Upcoming Webinar Alert! Join us for a discussion on the future of digital trade and the evolution of US digital trade policies. 🗓️ Date and Time: Thursday, November 9, 11:00-12:00 AM EST 🌐 Register here: https://lnkd.in/eQTQ5-Ep The US has long led efforts at the bilateral and multilateral level to set rules governing digital trade. US policymakers have been advocates of the free flow of information across borders, because it underpins digital trade and access to information. The US has also been an enthusiastic participant at e-commerce talks at the WTO. The WTO reports those talks have made considerable progress–negotiators have agreed to final language on consumer protection, spam and open government data. But in late October, trade journalists reported that “the Biden administration will end its support for proposals on data flows, data localization and source code being discussed in the World Trade Organization.” Trade officials stated that they need “policy space.” Reuters reported that U.S. officials said they must find ways to balance “the right to regulate in the public interest and the need to address anticompetitive behavior in the digital economy.” While Senator Elizabeth Warren praised the move, others, including Senator Ron Wyden and the Digital Trade Caucus, stated that the USG was abandoning “long standing principles and in so doing, providing a ‘a win for China.’” This webinar will focus on what exactly is going on and its implications for digital trade, the data flows that underpin AI, and US international economic leadership. 🎤 Speakers: Jonathan McHale, Vice President, Digital Trade, the Computer and Communications Industry Association Helen Royal, Head of WTO Digital Trade Negotiations, Digital and Telecoms Trade, UK Department for Science, Innovation & Technology Burcu Kilic, Ph.D., Senior Fellow, Centre for International Governance Innovation Nigel Cory Corey, Associate Director, Trade Policy, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation 🎙️ Moderator: Susan Aaronson, Research Professor and Director, Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub, GWU Don't miss this opportunity to gain insights into the future of digital trade and the changing dynamics in global policy.
