Is chasing AGI a mistake? What even is AGI? AGI is defined in many ways, but it’s generally about automating human tasks. Is the goal to replace people with machines? I’m all for building lean teams and being efficient—that’s why I built DataInsta, to connect companies with top AI & Data talents. But the aim wasn’t to reduce hiring; it was to help companies with fewer resources access great minds and to empower professionals to work independently, offering security in case of layoffs or the need for more options. Sure, if AGI might helps create new products or advances science, that’s great. (Personally, as a scientist, I’ll never believe that AGI will reach human-level capabilities, no matter what they try.) But is AGI really worth it if it leads to fewer jobs? What kind of society are we building? A society where people feel less needed? Imagine if the billions invested in AGI were instead invested in people, education, and building a future where AI helps us work less but still have meaningful jobs. I’d rather see AI making people’s work easier, helping companies save time and money—not by cutting jobs, but by improving efficiency. Focusing too much on AGI might be a distraction. Instead of chasing an uncertain future, we should invest in AI that helps us today—by improving healthcare, boosting productivity, and enhancing education.
