June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate love, diversity, and the LGBTQIA+ community. The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) proudly joins this celebration, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and acceptance for all. Pride Month highlights the ongoing fight for equality and the right to live authentically. We at NACDD are committed to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or disabilities, can live their best lives. We emphasize that the voices and experiences of individuals with developmental disabilities are crucial within the LGBTQIA+ community, and celebrate these individuals and their contributions, recognizing their strength and resilience. As we commemorate Pride Month, let us reaffirm our commitment to equity and respect for all. Together, we can create a future that embraces diversity and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to live a life of dignity and opportunity. Happy Pride Month from the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities!

July 17, 2024 marks the four-year commemoration of the passing of Congressman John Lewis. The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) stands firmly in support of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, recognizing it as a pivotal step toward ensuring equal access to the ballot for all Americans. John Lewis dedicated his life to the fight for civil rights, advocating tirelessly for the right to vote, a fundamental democratic principle. By passing this act, we honor his legacy and continue his mission to eliminate discriminatory practices that hinder individuals, especially those with disabilities, from fully participating in the electoral process. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, access to voting is often fraught with challenges, including physical barriers, inadequate accommodations, and discriminatory practices. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act addresses these issues by restoring and strengthening protections against voting discrimination, thus promoting a more inclusive and accessible voting environment. Ensuring that every citizen can exercise their right to vote is not only a matter of fairness but also a crucial component of a healthy democracy. Moreover, NACDD believes that protecting voting rights is essential to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, giving them a voice in decisions that affect their lives. The passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is a necessary measure to safeguard this fundamental right and to advance our collective goal of equal access and participation for all members of society. By supporting this act, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values of equality, and inclusion that John Lewis championed throughout his life.
