NEW REPORT: People with disabilities face potential discrimination in crucial areas such as employment, benefits, and healthcare due to biased algorithms and technologies. These biased outcomes can lead to unfair treatment and reduced health outcomes for disabled individuals. "As technologies – algorithmic and otherwise – continue to become incorporated into everyday life, and as people with disabilities interact with them more and more, disparate and problematic effects will only increase, both in frequency and in severity." DeafHealth’s project has been awarded $250,000 through the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award Program, an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The COVID-19 pandemic has sped up telehealth usage in healthcare, but best practices for the Deaf community are still unknown. Deaf individuals who use American Sign Language face communication and health literacy challenges, making virtual healthcare potentially inaccessible. The two-year project, “Building Capacity for Deaf American Sign Language Users in Virtual Healthcare PCOR/CER” will form a national Deaf Patient Coalition. This coalition will gather diverse Deaf patient experiences with virtual healthcare to help shape future patient-centered outcomes research and comparative clinical effectiveness research focused on healthcare virtual platforms for the Deaf community. By collaborating with academic institutions, researchers, and patient communities, this groundbreaking project aims to advance equitable care and decision-making among Deaf patients. The project is led by Allysa Dittmar, MHS, Vice President at DeafHealth, the health and patient advocacy division of Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD). Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), under the leadership of Dr. Tiffany Panko, executive director of the Deaf Health Care and Biomedical Science Hub and director of the Deaf Health Laboratory at RIT National Technical Institute for the Deaf will support the project. Deaf people have a right to equitable healthcare but... - Nearly 70% of doctors recognize that they are at risk of a lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for not providing accommodations - Over 1/3 of doctors surveyed said they know little or nothing about the ADA - Approximately 70% of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals have experienced difficulties communicating with their doctors due to lack of accommodations - 61% of deaf individuals rate their overall healthcare experience as lower quality compared to hearing individuals, often due to unmet communication needs Sources: National Association of the Deaf, Health Affairs, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Adults with limited English proficiency who have more visits with providers who speak their preferred language are less likely to report facing language barriers while getting health care. However, our report shows nearly 4 in 10 adults with LEP say less than half of their recent health care visits were with a provider who spoke their preferred language. https://bit.ly/3UKxvaX

This is not a perspective that is considered in typical healthcare situations, though it should be. Deaf individuals are more than deaf, they are a part of other communities, including additional marginalized communities. They are Deaf and Queer, Deaf and black, Deaf and ____.
