"The direction of change is inevitable, but the speed is up to us.” Great to read RMI’s recent report “The Cleantech Revolution” from June 2024 on the current state of progress in cleantech. According to RMI, the exponential growth of cleantech will absolutely continue. By 2030, we will be installing 1,000 GW of solar a year and selling 6,000 GWh of batteries a year. Electrification rates will double. The drivers of this growth are more powerful than the barriers, but now is the time to act. We need to continue to build out renewables and electrify everything. The US #battery market is growing faster than ever. According to Canary Media Inc., overall storage installations, including utility-scale, home, and commercial, grew 84% in Q1 this year alone. This growth means that batteries are becoming an increasingly meaningful resource available to support the grid. That is, if those batteries can be harnessed and orchestrated appropriately. The reality is that it is difficult to integrate and connect to all of these batteries in order to allow this distributed storage to benefit the grid. The consumer battery industry is getting more fragmented not less. More choice is great for consumers, but it’s difficult for utilities, DERMS companies, and VPP providers to keep up. New manufacturers means new, bespoke integrations that are required to harness these resources to benefit the grid. Canary Media reported last year on all the new activity in the space: https://lnkd.in/ej-RgPa5 And Wood Mackenzie highlighted how quickly this space is changing in their report from 2023 where they noted that, in 2018, Tesla and LG made up 96% of residential solar-plus-storage projects, but in 2023 they only made up 65% of installations. The percentage of customers pairing batteries with solar installations is up to 30% nationwide in the most recent quarter, according to data from EnergySage. In California, this is driven by recent changes to incentives, and in Texas and Florida, the increase in home batteries may be due to more frequent extreme weather events.
