Thursday's Detroit Homecoming features a conversation with two rising stars – one on screen and one in the business world – who have collaborated to become social entrepreneurs and angel investors and have made a strategic decision to invest in the City of Detroit.  Nia Batts is the managing director & COO of Union Heritage, one of the nation’s leading minority-owned, diversified investment management companies. She is also a general partner of its venture arm, Union Heritage Ventures; the only majority African-American owned, and majority women-owned venture capital firm in the state of Michigan. Sophia Bush is an American actress, activist, entrepreneur, and investor. Sophia is a member of the Directors Guild of America and has starred in various independent projects, shows and movies such as the hit comedy John Tucker Must Die, Incredibles 2, The CW’s hit drama One Tree Hill, and starred as Detective Erin Lindsay for 4 seasons on Dick Wolf’s Chicago PD. In 2020, Sophia appeared in NBC’s drama This is Us and joined the cast of Hulu’s, Love, Victor, playing Veronica. Sophia can currently be seen starring in the CBS drama, Good Sam, as Dr. Sam Griffith. As an investor, Sophia was an early angel investor in companies such as Uber, Seed, Dirty Lemon, CrowdRise, StyleSeat, Better Battery Co., AllVoices, Detroit Blows, Bev and Genexa. She is also an investor and co-owner of LA-based women’s soccer club, Angel City FC. And in 2021, she joined Union Heritage Venture Partners as a general partner. The duo, alongside Billie Jean King and Allyson Felix, serve as strategic advisors to First Women’s Bank; a first-of-its-kind, purpose driven bank with a mission to grow the economy and advance the role of women within it. Good News! Shane Battier is launching a branch of the Battier Take Charge Foundation he co-founded with his wife and fellow Detroit-area expat Heidi. The local partner is University Prep Science & Math High School, part of University Prep Schools network. Program engages teens in ways to enhance college opportunities - and helps with scholarship and support once a teen heads off to college. So far, their foundation has hit $3 million in scholarships and programming in Miami -- where he was part of two NBA championship Miami Heat teams and in Camden, N.J. Shane attended Detroit Homecoming II and regrets a schedule conflict prevents him attending this year. But with this expansion of the Take Charge Foundation programming, we suspect we'll see more of Heidi and Shane in "the D."

One of the most exciting panels this year is sure to be on Friday morning at Michigan Central when Roger Ehrenberg, managing partner, Eberg Capital, Trevor Lauer, vice chairman and group president, DTE Energy, and John W. Rogers, Jr. chairman, co-CEO, and chief investment officer, Ariel Investments kick off the morning. They'll discuss how savvy investors look at Detroit and investment opportunities and why they put their dollars in the city. From climate migration to the growing ecosystem of talent and energy, they'll delve into what's driving their motivation. This year, we are so excited to welcome expats for our opening dinner at The Shepherd. Library Street Collective's ambitious neighborhood-wide cultural revitalization effort in the East Village neighborhood of Detroit, known as Little Village. At the heart of this initiative lies the Shepherd, a 110-year-old Romanesque-style church, most recently identified as Good Shepherd before closing in 2016.
