The Journey to Affordable Housing in Namibia: Groundbreaking Collaboration On September 2, 2024, Development Workshop Namibia (DWN) and the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on providing affordable housing in Namibia. Through this partnership, DWN’s "Housing For All" program and NHE will work on servicing affordable land and assist individuals in building their homes, creating wealth that can be passed on to future generations. The NHE Chief Executive Officer, Mr Gisbertus Mukulu, acknowledged that addressing housing needs for low-income earners is challenging amid rising costs associated with land delivery and building materials. He praised the relationship with DWN as timely and potentially valuable to existing interventions such as the Informal Settlement Upgrading Project (ISUP). "The task is huge, as in many towns more than half of the population now live in informal settlements. A challenge of this scale needs a response of similar scale, and no institution alone will be able to address this," stated DWN Country Director, Ms. Jessica Brown. The signing of the MoU marks the official establishment of a partnership between both organizations, initiating a pilot project aimed at assessing potential future collaboration and mutual benefit. Development Workshop Namibia
Non-profit Organizations
A Namibian NGO with programmes on social housing, urban sanitation and early childhood development
About us
Development Workshop Namibia (DWN) was founded in 2016 and today implements three major programs: HOUSING FOR ALL: An initiative to address the housing crisis in Southern Africa. By planning and developing residential land with property title at the lowest possible cost, we provide access to housing to those that otherwise end up in slums and informal settlements. PLAY FOR ALL: An early childhood development (ECD) program that supports ECD centres in informal settlements, whereby we contribute to the improvement of education when it matters most, at the early age between 0-7 years. COMMUNITY LED TOTAL SANITATION: An urban sanitation project that uses a community approach to improve sanitation in existing informal settlements, facilitating the construction of toilets by informal settlement residents. Projects are implemented in 15 towns, benefitting informal settlement residents. DWN currently has 25 employees, headquarters in Windhoek and seven field offices. DWN is part of a world-wide network of Development Workshop organisations and works closely with Development Workshop Zambia (DWZ), and Development Workshop Switzerland (DWS). If you would like to stay in touch with all of our programmes, please also follow the DWS LinkedIn page where the latest updates will be posted first.

🎉🎇 This Heroes Day, we proudly recognize individuals like Ms. Maria Nandjaya, who exemplify the positive impact of our Housing For All program. Maria’s mother, Ms. Martha Nandjaya, was a beneficiary of the program, securing a residential plot that provided crucial stability for their family. After her mother’s passing in 2020, Maria, at just 22, took on the responsibility of continuing her mother’s legacy and fulfilling her dream of homeownership. Supported by our Housing For All program, Maria invested her savings and her late mother’s legacy to build a modern 3-bedroom house. Her story is a compelling example of resilience and the meaningful impact of our initiatives. Maria reflects, "I could not give up because it was always my mother's dream to own a house. I hope she is proud of me." Let’s work together to create more stories of resilience and hope! Empowering the minds of tomorrow through storytelling 📚✨ We are thrilled to share that Development Workshop Namibia has launched a new series of children's storybooks aimed at promoting socio-emotional development among young children, in Namibia! 📚✨ These captivating books, created by local writers Hilma Weber and Jessica Brown, and illustrator Elizabeth Kopf, are designed to nurture young minds and foster a love of reading from an early age. They also play a significant part in our Play for All programme, which focuses on Early Childhood Development (ECD) in Namibia's informal settlements. At the launch, we proudly presented these storybooks and library boxes to several kindergartens in the informal settlements of Goreangab Dam, helping inspire a love for reading among the little ones. This incredible initiative wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of our amazing partners— the Switzerland Embassy in Namibia, Interteam, and MTC— who believe in the power of education and community upliftment. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special occasion. Let's continue to empower the next generation with the tools they need to thrive! #earlychildhooddevelopment #developmentworkshopnamibia #Interteam #Switzerlandembassyinnamibia #MTC #education #readingisfun #communitydevelopment #socioemotionaldevelopment
