Celebrating the ✨25th Anniversary of the landmark decision in Olmstead vs. Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson ✨where the Supreme Court held that unjustified segregation of people with disabilities into institutions is a form of unlawful discrimination under the ADA and Section 504. With Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg writing for the majority, the Supreme Court held that people with disabilities have the right to live and receive services in the environment of their choice. Twenty-five years later, Disability Rights NJ continues to fight tirelessly for the ideals that Olmstead uplifts through systemic action and individual representation cases spanning a wide breadth of our work such as education law, vocational rehabilitation, private duty nursing, personal care assistance, institutionalization, and more recently - Medicaid redeterminations after the unwinding of the Public Health Emergency. We will never stop advocating for inclusion into society for New Jerseyans with disabilities.

It's #FlagDay, America! On this day, in 1977 the Continental Congress adopted the "Stars and Stripes" as the official American flag, to unify the United States of America with a singular flag. Today, we celebrate this symbol of our freedom and nation's resilience in continuing to fight for true equality and justice for all Americans.

School districts should work to remove barriers facing justice-impacted youth with disabilities, not create new roadblocks. On May 14, 2024, Disability Rights NJ filed a complaint with the New Jersey Department of Education’s Office of Special Education alleging that Trenton Public Schools systemically denies education to students with disabilities returning from out-of-home placements, especially youth impacted by the justice system. We call on the New Jersey Department of Education to rapidly develop, implement, and enforce transparent corrective action that ensures timely re-enrollment and education of students returning to Trenton Public Schools from juvenile detention centers and other out-of-home placements. https://lnkd.in/eh6DNS6r Disability Rights NJ thanks the National Center for Youth Law for its invaluable assistance investigating and developing this complaint. #DisabilityRights #JuvenileJustice #YouthLaw #Complaint #investigation #SpecialEducation #barriers #SystemicAction #NewJersey #Trenton #ReEnrollment
