Techistentialism: Agency in the Age of AI 🇯🇵 Delighted to see the World Economic Forum republishing my article, “5 Strategies to Activate Your Agency and Stay Relevant in the Age of AI” in Japanese. Originally published in CogX, this OpEd explores the intersection of AI and human agency. ❓Today, artificial intelligence seems to be the answer to everything, irrespective of the question. AI’s potential for profound benefits comes face-to-face with existential risks. More nuanced than human extinction alone, these risks challenge our values, freedoms, even the trajectory of civilization. Algorithmic control is gradually replacing human judgment, influencing everything from news feeds to job prospects, and shaping beliefs and allegiances. This subtle erosion of agency and choice, though less dramatic than apocalyptic scenarios, warrants serious attention. Evolutionary pressure prioritizes relevance. The pressure is on us to make more relevant decisions. In this article we explore “Techistentialism”, to examine how technological and existential conditions intertwine and impact our decision-making. If AI begins to determine outcomes for us, it may curtail our choices and existential agency. Techistentialism studies the nature of human beings, existence, and decision-making in our technological world. The true existential risk is not machines taking over the world, but the opposite, where humans start operating like idle machines unable to exercise their freedom, agency and choice. How Anticipatory Governance Can Help Us With Unpredictability! I. Systemic disruption Systemic disruption, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the energy crises and inflationary pressures, forces us to confront unpredictability II. Crowdstrike The recent CrowdStrike incident was just the tip of the iceberg, with any one event capable of rewriting the world’s economic landscape III. The AAA Framework for unpredictability This framework defines the skills to be developed for an unpredictable world, as standard playbooks become increasingly ineffective: 1. Antifragile: Building the right foundations for resilience 2. Anticipatory: Improving future-preparedness to navigate uncertainty 3. Agility: Responding to whatever futures emerge IV. New Roles 1. Chief Existential Officer With an increasing number of asymmetric risks and opportunities, organizations and their governance bodies may need a Chief Existential Officer (CEO2). The CEO2 is responsible for acting upon low-probability but high-consequence existential risks, and accompanying opportunities, that may stretch past typical planning cycles 2. Chief Bridging Officer The Chief Bridging Officer (CBO) role is a journey of discovery, with the emergent and strategic agility to constantly respond to changes in the external environment. They initiate needed changes with anticipatory vision, consistent with long-term aspirations V. Outlook To operate in today’s unpredictable environment, we all need to be agile decision-makers. Reconciling short-term priorities with longer-term aspirations can be tricky where change is the norm.
