We empower Detroit students to achieve their dreams by providing a safe haven and a launching pad for academic success.

About us

Just beyond the hustle and bustle of Eastern Market and downtown Detroit, a grey brick industrial building sits neatly at the corner of E. Vernor Highway and Beaufait Street. Each day, like clockwork, vans pull up and children excitedly rush in. Happy chatter and boundless energy fills the air. And – with patience, persistence, dedication, tough love, compassion and care – lives are changed within those four walls. The children who enter the doors of the Downtown Boxing Gym emerge as the best version of themselves with hope, promise, knowledge, skills, strength, determination, and the tools they need to pursue their dreams. Our FREE, out-of-school-time academic and athletic program for Detroit students is the brainchild of Khali Sweeney – a Detroit native on a mission to build a better world. Together with executive director, Jessica Hauser, and a hardworking team of coaches, tutors, staff and volunteers, the program has steadily grown since 2007 – and racked up a 100% high school graduation rate every year in the process. Our gym doesn't train heavyweight boxers, we train heavyweight scholars. DBG is a safe haven from the streets. We knock out inequality in an imperfect educational system, level the playing field, and give students a fighting chance at a winning future. We train kids for life.

  • Building positive relationships isn’t just about academic success; it’s about preparing students for life. Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in forming meaningful connections with others, and these skills go far beyond the classroom. We focus on fostering emotional intelligence to help students build strong, supportive relationships. These skills are essential for personal growth and success in every aspect of life. When students learn to understand and manage their emotions, communicate effectively, and build healthy relationships, they are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the world around them 🙇♂️ Investing in emotional intelligence and relationship-building is an investment in the future. By helping students develop these skills, we’re preparing them for a lifetime of meaningful connections and opportunities. #CommunityBuilding #DBG #NonProfit

Connecting Capital to Impact and Building Legacy

Bringing kids together from over 50 different neighborhoods each day is so impactful. Watching them engage in a variety of academic, athletic and enrichment activities is sparking future opportunity that’s overwhelmingly evident but that time to break bread together just hits different. This is DBG - we are NOT A BOXING GYM!

We believe that community is built around shared experiences—and there’s something truly special about coming together over a meal. It’s more than just nourishment; it’s about connection, understanding, and creating a sense of belonging. Sharing a meal provides a unique opportunity for our students, staff, and volunteers to connect beyond our program activities. It’s a time where everyone can pause, engage in meaningful conversations, and build relationships that exceed the day-to-day challenges. These interactions encourage trust and a sense of family—key elements that inspire our students to thrive. #Community #DBG #Nonprofit

  • As we continue our commitment to supporting underserved youth, it’s important to recognize the broader role equity plays in shaping their futures. Equity isn’t just about fairness in education—it’s about creating opportunities in every area of life to ensure all young people can thrive. Here are a few key reasons why investing in equity is crucial: ➡️ Bridges the opportunity gap: Providing resources and support to underserved youth helps close gaps created by systemic inequities, giving every young person a fair chance to succeed. ➡️ Fosters long-term success: True equity empowers students by providing them with the skills, opportunities, and environments they need to thrive, whether in college, careers, or other life pursuits. ➡️ Uplifts communities: When all youth have access to quality opportunities and support, it strengthens communities and fosters sustainable growth. ➡️ Promotes social justice: Ensuring that underserved youth receive the support they need is a step toward building a more just, inclusive, and equitable society. These are just a few reasons why we’re committed to advocating for equity and making a difference in the lives of our youth. 💡How can we collectively work to dismantle the barriers that prevent children from accessing the opportunities they need to reach their full potential? #DBG #EducationEquity #NonProfit
