Digital Brooklyn: The Pioneer Building at 41 Flatbush Avenue features in a new interactive map produced by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership to celebrate the 20th anniversary of downtown’s rezoning, reports Architectural Record. A former storage facility, the Pioneer Building was restored and adapted by Quinlan Development Group and BBB into one of the neighborhood’s few historic buildings offering modern, creative office space amidst an explosion of new development. It's exciting to see Curry J. Hackett's "Ugly Beauties" installation at The Plaza at 300 Ashland highlighted in Oculus' summer edition. The piece was on view from February to April 2024 and was a collaborative commission by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership with support from Two Trees Management Co. and the Van Alen Institute.

Under the guidance of Mike Bloomberg, Dan Doctoroff and Rob Walsh, to the sustained leadership of a litany of dedicated people from Joe Chan, James Whelan, Alan Fishman and Robert B. The legacy of those who shaped this area - during the time they were responsible for it - will be felt for many, many years to come. Pretty mind-boggling how much Downtown Brooklyn has changed over the past 2 decades, much of it under the leadership of Regina Myer and her team, and of course the Bloomberg and subsequent administrations. Check out this Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) story map: https://lnkd.in/exCaeFrG As part of a studio project at Pratt Institute - circa 2005, right on the precipice of all this change - I went door-to-door along Livingston Street surveying business owners about what kind of resources they would need to adapt to change and stay in business in the face of all the new development that was anticipated. Twenty years on it's gratifying - and pleasantly surprising - to see how many businesses have successfully weather the neighborhood's evolution, even while new stores and services have opened. I'm also pretty proud to have contributed in a small way to the transformation of Downtown Brooklyn's streets to be safer, more walkable, and more transit- and bike-friendly (often working with colleagues like Ryan Russo, Randy Wade, Christopher Hrones, and Andy Wiley-Schwartz), e.g. pedestrianizing the stretch of Dekalb Ave between Bond and Gold streets to allow for a larger and contiguous Albee Square plaza; improving the Tillary & Adams capital project design to include sidewalk-grade protected bikeways and raised crosswalks; developing the conceptual geometry for Fox Square plaza; and project managing the original Willoughby Street pedestrian plaza. Here at Sam Schwartz our team has continued to plan, design, and help implement better streets in and around Downtown Brooklyn through our work on the Brooklyn Tech Triangle, Downtown Brooklyn Public Realm, Brooklyn Strand, and BQE visioning plans, with partners like DBP, HR&A Advisors, WXY architecture + urban design, Gensler, and of course New York City Department of Transportation and New York City Economic Development Corporation. Neighborhood change can be a mixed bag, but I think in the case of Downtown Brooklyn it's very much been a net positive for all Brooklynites and the city as a whole.
