Happy #TriviaTuesday! Yesterday was #AssistanceDogDay, and as you might imagine, the holiday honors assistance dogs as well as their dedicated trainers. Marcie Davis, paraplegic dog lover, started the holiday in 2009. Over the last 15 years, the holiday has expanded its celebration nationwide! These wonderful dogs help people with disabilities or illnesses live a more fulfilling life by providing them with the tools to navigate through whatever challenges with which they are dealing. At Dungarvin, many of those we support (and our staff) are blessed to have service dogs! Let us know your answer to today's question in the comments. This group of three artists put their heads and hands together to make this beautiful piece for our #2024DungarvinArtExhibition! We think Caroline, Hikari and Karen of Long Beach, California reached new heights with their drawing. "They described their happy place as a location where one experiences feelings such as elation, optimism, and contentment. It frequently represents a setting where people feel unburdened, at ease, and removed from the stresses of daily life, engaging in activities they find enjoyable," shared their DSP, Tonique. Recently, Dungarvin North Carolina celebrated the dedication and longevity of some amazing staff! Four individuals (Rita Barnes, Georgia Best, Tonya Owens and Mary Merrick) each celebrated 20 years with the organization. "I've had such a fulfilling career here because I'm so passionate about what I do. I'm continuously learning and still find great satisfaction in overcoming challenges and making a positive impact. I have an amazing team that is very supportive and provides excellent service daily. I am truly grateful for my career and the opportunity to help others reach their goals." - Rita Barnes, Dungarvin-ACI Director Tonya and Mary have a unique situation as the two are mother/daughter and provide services for their daughter/sisters. “I’m thankful that Dungarvin allows me to continue to do what I love and enjoy which is to provide services to those with special needs," said Georgia Best, Program Specialist. “My sister has been a client with Dungarvin for a very long time, so it just seemed right (for me) to work here. You really can’t find many agencies that let you work with family. I’m just looking forward to what’s next to come,” shared Tonya Owens, Direct Support Professional. In addition to this group, Charles Eggleston, DSP, Marquita McNeil, DSP, and Latoya Davis, DSP, all celebrated 10 years with the organization. Congratulations to ANCOR DSP of the Year nominee for the state of California, Sonya Jeffries! Sonya is the model Direct Support Professional (DSP) as she goes out of her way to make those she supports feel comfortable and confident. One individual she supports was deeply struggling with her appearance and feelings of self-worth, and Sonya did not take this lightly. "She explained to her that she was beautiful and spent the whole day giving her a makeover, doing her hair and makeup and even assisted her in finding the perfect outfit," shared her nominator, Tiffany Scott. "Sonya explained that it wasn’t enough to just tell her she was beautiful, but she needed to feel it." Since this experience, Sonya has taken it upon herself to make some significant long-term changes. She is currently in the process of creating a self-esteem workshop where she can continue to help this individual (and others!) boost their confidence. Her workshop will cover self-acceptance, communication, hygiene, as well as how to build a support system. A week ago today, Dungarvin Connecticut invited DDS Case Managers, High School Transition Coordinators and parents of students to tour their facility so they could learn more about the services offered in the state. "Our day program was the highlight of the tour," said Willie Mobley, Development Coordinator. "Our visitors were amazed with our use of technology, specifically the OMI VISITA Projector, as well as our wonderful staff, of course."
