Land restoration can actually help protect mother nature and our homes. By removing drain tiles that were historically used for agriculture, we can almost instantly create wetlands that absorb floodwater like a sponge. These areas keep water out of our roads, basements, and yards. Take a look! #conservation #restoration #biology #ecology #floodwatermanagement #floodwater #localgov

Behind-the-scenes look at what’s going on at Danada House!
Renovations are underway at the Danada House! Check out this video for a behind-the-scenes look at how Allen+Pepa Architects, Featherstone, Project + Construction Management, and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County are working together to deliver a successful project. Originally built in 1939, this beautiful estate is now a popular wedding venue within the scenic Danada Forest Preserve. Renovations to the building began in April to renew and restore this historic building. The primary goals of the project include: • Repairing and replacing aging materials • Improving building accessibility with new ramps and a lift • Improving energy efficiency with new lighting and insulation • Improving safety with architecturally integrated fire protection and detection • Improving function with surgical interior spatial reconfiguration When complete, the building will be more functional and beautiful for the venue operators and guests. It will also be easier for the Forest Preserve District to maintain, preserving the building’s function and beauty for years to come.

In 2020, the District installed a water filter system at Deep Quarry Lake. It was designed to keep invasive zebra mussels from spreading into the West Branch of the DuPage River. After four years, it has thus far accomplished its goal! Zebra mussels have the potential to outcompete native organisms for food, which is why it's so important the District acts as a good steward to prevent their spread. #zebramussels #civilengineering #civilengineer #invasivespecies

Riffles are the lungs of the river. They create bubbles that put dissolved oxygen into the water. Fish and other aquatic organisms rely on this to breathe. Learn more about what we're doing at Salt Creek near Graue Mill to restore habitat. #restoration #conservation #rivers #aquatic #fish #biology

Yesterday, Natural Resources staff released 282 freshwater mussels into the East Branch of the DuPage River at Greene Valley. All of the mussels were raised at Blackwell's Urban Stream Research Center. Three different species were released, including 86 Plain Pocketbook (Lampsilis cardium), 68 Fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea), and 128 Creeper (Strophitus undulatus). All individuals were tagged with different colors of glitter to indicate what species and what year they were from. Pictured: Seasonal Aquatics Pre-professionals Lauren and Rachel smile alongside Ecologist Jim Intihar. They are each holding a different species of mussel.

Recently, federally endangered Hine's emerald dragonflies were released into one of our forest preserves. After spending two years at the Urban Stream Research Center, it was time for larvae to molt into adults and enter the wild. Historically, the Hine's emerald dragonfly was found in seven states, but today can only be seen in four. By maintaining high quality natural areas, we're able to give a variety of species habitats to call home in DuPage. #dragonfly #dragonflies #endangeredspecies #conservation #insects

A prairie regrows after a prescribed burn was conducted to remove invasive plant species (March to July 2024). Fire is an important tool used in the fall and spring to remove invasive species, put nutrients back into the soil, and help seeds to germinate. -Danada Forest Preserve, IL #PrescribedFire #InvasiveSpecies #nativeplants #Conservation
